Hi there

My niece is studying Manadrin at GCSE and an opportunity has come up for her to study Alevels at Wycombe Abbey International school in China. One of her Alevel subjects will be Mandarin. I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with the school? Or does anyone have children there? Will the have the same opportunities as UK students in terms of being able to get into Russell group universities or Oxbridge?

? universities accept students based on grades not the name of their secondary school.
overseas courses will/would need to have the course content evaluated for reciprocity.
You can call and ask the uni/uni’s if they will accept that course from that particular school on par with the UK
version of the course, I’d request that in writing.

take this for what it is …. Overheard conversation at a very top London restaurant, few months ago, lunch.
The conversation in Cantonese, I didn’t catch it all. It was about WA (China), clearly they were mothers of students, they didn’t say anything negative. It was mummy chatter, very high expectations, .

What I do know from admissions to Uni, admissions Oxbridge & Russell group. Very grades driven, areas of study have vastly different required grades and admissions competition.

My global opinion, is that Ivy Leagues etc would be great opportunity to flex study of Mandarin in China, the experience etc.

UK, Oxbridge does read essays so could be a plus, other Russell group … mostly not reading essays & I think no longer essay in UCAS. Multiple hurdles for Oxbridge depending - predicted grades, personal statements, entry exams & interview. If choice of area of study relies on Mandarin or culture then it’s a plus.

Sorry don’t know more.

Are you based in the UK? So this would be an English child moving to board in China but then wanting to attend university in the UK?

if so, I would just agree with PPs that you need to get good information on results in the subjects your DC is planning to study at A level. Good grades are paramount. Also I see that Wycombe Abbey International has four schools in China so make sure the results are for the school your DC will attend as the quality of teaching may vary.

It sounds like a great opportunity for your DC to experience a different but very beautiful culture, if your DC is up for that.

They have three schools in China. All are franchised education business. The one in Changzhou was originally Oxford International College. Then recently they opened two more schools in Nanjing and one other city. They are all co-ed boarding schools teaching mostly the English curriculum (iGCSE and A-Levels). I believe in conjunction with a charity called Engage with China, they offer UK kids to go to the schools there to learn Chinese whilst continuing to study the English curriculum.

Not familiar with their university successes, perhaps they have information on their websites.

Maybe for a term. I personally wouldn’t send my child to China. UK Sixth Form
is such a coming of age experience, teachers treat Sixth formers so differently it’s such a well trodden path. It would obviously be excellent for her Mandarin but her other subjects/social life would suffer.
