Hi, does anyone's child attend Canford 6th form? We are looking into it as an option via sports Scholarship and bursary. All very new as never looked at private education before. DS in year 10, currently the school he is at has an intake of 800 students at 6th form! It's a very good school but we are looking at private school due to sports/rugby aspects. I have looked online and keep reading that Canford has 30 students in 6th Form. Is this true? If so this is tiny. Wonder how they get teams for sports filled? As surely some will be more academic and some more sporty. Or less I have completely read it wrong Confused Any advise about Canford 6th form via scholarship and bursary gratefully received

I think what they mean is that there are 30 new students in the lower sixth as it expands slightly, so Years 9-11 are about 125 and the sixth form is therefore about 150-55 (allow for a few to leave after GCSEs). There are also slightly more boys than girls (55/45%) so there will be a number of teams. They are opening a new sixth form centre and I think then the 6th form might expand a little further (180 ish).

Canford has been getting good results and rankings. They compete in all sports against the others schools in South/South West. They’ve had some students in past get recruited to US for sport (sports scholarships). They’ve had many to Oxbridge and other top Unis.
Agree that 30 must be the “additional” intake for 6th form, which be be expanding as building additional housing for expanded 6th form.

Go for a tour or open day. They might be able to get a student in your chosen sport to do the tour.

Admissions office should be able to answer your questions, seriously no shame to ask about sports, scholarships / bursary.

Thanks that makes a bit more sense. I have contacted the admissions and he will
Go to a scholarship open afternoon for information then apply and have the assessments. My biggest worry is I have no clue about bursary criteria. We definitely have never planned for private education but because of the sports pathway he is on it has been suggested we apply. Do many kids get full bursaries for sport there? I am grasping at straws I know!

Honestly I would ask admissions. They’re generally very helpful and transparent. One thing to consider is his current sports commitments and how they would work with school commitments since scholars are expected to represent the school at matches and also Canford has longer days and Saturday school.

They do offer significant bursaries but be aware that schools expect parents to have raised as much as they can before awarding them, this can mean having to present bank account information, equity in property information etc. it varies by school though. Scholarships are different. In addition for sport there can be other sources of sponsorship. I know of a family whose eldest is there currently and they love it, they are a military family though so the support is different
