Dear all,
Happy new year .My DS, is currently on the waiting list for admission to WinCol for the 2024 session. I have several inquiries for which I would sincerely appreciate any feedback.

While DS performed commendably based on the information provided by the school, it appears he did not secure a place on the main list. I am curious about the dynamics of the waiting list and how it progresses. Additionally, I understand that there is another examination phase before the final selection. Could anyone share more details regarding the level of proficiency required in Latin to meet the threshold?

Any insights or information, pertaining to Latin, & over all life at the school would be of great value. Thank you 🙏

Winchester published GCSE and A level results on September 3rd in the first newsletter of term, which is publicly available on its website. The link comes up immediately with a quick Google search:

Thank you I didn't see this on the website.
Do you know what the breakdown of A*A B was ?
The headmaster describes the results as mixed, I expected better as this is the first year that includes girls and day students.

I'm afraid I don't have any more information than was published in the newsletter.

The numbers of day pupils and girls in sixth form are still small in comparison to the year group as a whole, so I'm not sure I'd expect that factor to have made make a significant difference to the results.

Thank you @Micheldever

My DS was fortunately invited to the House Master's interview next January. Can anyone share your first-hand experiences in recent years? Thank you!

Morning! I am sure the interview differs a little by housemaster, but one of my lads was given a short math tests (I think largely to see how they work as apparently they were quite easy), shown a picture and asked how they would interpret it, and then had a pretty long discussion with the housemaster about their interests, dislikes, friendships etc. There isn’t much prep you can do - the housemasters are curating a year of pupils so want boys with different strengths who can all muck in, and an hour long interview enables them to really dig into the boys’ thoughts so prepackaged answers would probably be obvious. I think they like a bit of personality too. I have heard of some boys who didn’t click with the housemaster, or perhaps had overlapping skills with some other boys - you probably wouldn’t have 3 bassoon players in one house, get placed into a clearing system, and then get assigned other housemasters later in the process: on balance whilst it is rather stressful it is probably a good thing. You want your child to click with the housemaster as they are such an important presence in their lives.

Winch me: We sat the entrance and expecting results any moment now. I emailed the registrar about the house and house master. Really appreciate your advice.
I do have some worries as to the communication front. Based on my experience the communication has been very slow, sporadic and disorganised.

@MayBeitsNotRight that defo has not been my experience. I have, however, not had a couple of emails answered. Take a look at the admissions page and there are 3-4 people. The registrar is very busy so i tend to write to one of the other three to 'make an appt to speak to the registrar or one of them' depending on what the matter is about. They usually write back the next day. Calling is much more fruitful.

The registrar Andrew is an absolute gem. I was very honest with him about the pros and cons of my son and he found it quite funny and refreshing. He is really lovely and the topics of matter have been quite delicate so please feel comfortable in being honest yet upbeat/positive.

I found certain schools avoided conversation and others very warm and welcoming

My son got asked about 3 ppl who he would share on dinner table, what books has he read and was shown artwork which he had to describe. My son had prepared for the forst two bits and i sort of navigated him how to discuss art but he got a bit stuck! The housemaster said he had a very mature interview and did well so an offer was made. I went completely by the registrars recommendation.
