Radley for not very academic ds

Does anyone have recent experience of what it is like at Radley for - let’s say ‘average’ boys? DS is middle of the middle academically at his prep school. He isn’t particularly sporty either, but is social and has a lot of fun.
I don't want him to get all that self confidence knocked out of him, and I sometimes think it is better to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond rather than bumping along the bottom academically and sportingly. Don’t get me wrong, he is the BEST boy and I am so proud of him! But what sort of an atmosphere is there at Radley and what is the attitude towards less able kids? It always seems wonderful when we go and we hear great things from friends, but their sons have either been very academic or very sporty. Wondering whether a school like Sherborne, which seems to be more mixed in terms of ability, might suit him better.

From my children’s prep school only the top set boys are accepted at Radley, their academic standard is quite high. Sherborne entry is easier.

It sounds from your description that he would be fine for Radley if he is already registered. That's not quite the guaranteed place it used to be but still something like a default acceptance. If he's not already on the list the bar is quite high. Sherborne is raising its academic standards and has some very bright acholars at the top end, but is still a relatively broad entry school and probably easier to get into than Radley for a 'good bloke' who is academically middle of the pack. They are both terrific schools so it's probably also worth thinking about whether a rural or town location would suit him better.

Great thank you - I know from family members that it can be pretty miserable if you are in bottom sets and sports teams at eg Eton, so just wondered what the feeling was at Radley.

Bump, my sons have fantastically got into Radley (registered at birth which probably helped) but one in particular is not at all academic - not especially sporty or arty either, we are hoping he will find something he loves at senior school! Sherborne seems a great option too - apart from being a bit more of a ‘name’ I am curious to know what reason anyone has for why you would choose Radley over Sherborne (ignoring location)?

Blastosis1 · 24/09/2024 23:27

@Cornygirl Campus rather than in-town setting. More central location, marginally more caché, opportunity for rowing and beagling (might be out of date on the last point, and certainly will be soon). Speaking as a Sherborne parent we didn't opt for Radley because we thought the early registration - Warden's List dynamic might be unhealthy, and felt the campus setting might be constraining in upper years, plus we really liked the partnership with Sherborne Girls. We are v happy with our choice just as well because we are based in Devon but the families I know well at Radley are equally happy and haven't experienced those issues of concern, not least because the fleshpots of Oxford are a short train ride away. The fleshpots of Sherborne mostly close by 4pm on a Saturday!

Bit of a newbie here - could you guys explain about early registration / Warden's list please? 🙏🏻

Blastosis1 · 28/09/2024 16:20

You either register your son very early (ie from 0-4) or apply later via the Warden's List. The percentages of each may have changed in recent years but essentially the bar is lower for early registered boys (they used to enter automatically- I think that is now longer the case but its still not academically exacting) so the academic prowess comes in via the W List, with clever unregistered boys competing in Y6/7. The early registered boys seem to have higher status, for example they get first choice of Socials while those joining on W List get what's left. I may be a few years out of date, in which case I'm sure someone more current will be along shortly to set the record straight.
Everyone I know with DS at Radley seems to love it- but they were all early registration families.

we were wardens list a few years ago - DS at uni now, and were quite relieved to have the choice of Social done for us! How would you choose between them?!
Very happy with Radley. Can't imagine it's changed much!
