Tonbridge vs Wellington

Our DS has a place at both schools and it’s soon decision time. He is sporty, musical and bright (but not necessarily overly academic yet).
Difficult choice -Tonbridge is obv a brilliant, academic school while Wellington is co-Ed and offers the IB.
Just wondering in which school my son will more likely grow up as a grounded and well rounded individual 🤷🏻‍♀️
Any insights in either school would be much appreciated 🙏🏻

Where do you live? I have a few friends whose dc started at wellington this year and it seems as though it v much clears out at weekends bar international students. I know from other friends that Tonbridge also has a lot of weekly boarders. Therefore I’d do whichever is closer. My friends are doing a 5 hour round trip on Saturday and Sunday.

My caveat is that I know this is often a topic of disagreement on MN and I suspect this means that it’s somewhat house, year or even just friendship group dependent. However, I think it’s clear that full boarding is becoming pretty rare and something to definitely bear in mind.

I agree with PP. if it’s weekend boarding you’re after , choose a school with fixed exeats and zero flexi tolerance.
for anything else, look for schools within decent commutable distance.
Both T and W are great schools and if your prep head as earmarked both as suitable for your DS, then you won’t go wrong with either.

Thank you both - we live very close to Wellington, which is an appeal + the co-ed bit but love the feel of Tonbridge, the HM and the boys seem grounded and kind. Difficult choice ! Thank you 🙏🏻

How grounded and kind they are is more a reflection on your own family values rather than where they have lessons and stay during the week. Imo.

svevush · 15/10/2023 16:27

yes agree but you do end up "outsourcing" some of their education with the boarding so it is an important choice, imo.

My DS is at Tonbridge, we love the flexibility of weekly boarding, Tonbridge is very academic yet very rounded. There's something for everyone, be that sports, music, etc. The staff and students are very warm, it's an incredible school really! @svevush is there anything in particular you'll like to know? Tonbridge is also more academic than Wellington, if that matters to you.

Xmen · 21/10/2023 07:09

OP - do you have a gut feel?

Tonbridge is more of a STEM-school and Wellington is much less so, you visited the science centre, then you will know what I mean.

Other than distance, I would also consider the science/humanities pivot. For a STEM-leaning kid, Wellington will likely feel more limiting than Tonbridge.

RS1001 · 21/10/2023 17:47

@svevush I can’t comment on Wellington but can on Tonbridge.

There was an incident in June 2022 at one of the Tonbridge boarding houses - Judde. Post the incident 5 boys left the school. For me this is the public face of severe bullying that the school does NOT have under control. I would be asking lots of questions around this. In my experience the school discipline is pretty poor and remains so. Good luck with your decisions - we all need the best information possible to make the correct decision. If you have any question please DM me - there is more I can share.

If you live near Wellington I'd send him there. It's a good school.

a previous poster is correct, after sport on Saturday there's not a lot goes on at the weekend. But if you are home weekends @ he can come home, it's perfect. Or if he makes a friend who stays weekends too.

id say it has no more issues than any other school & less than some (crap like vaping etc).

each year group is really different - I do find that weird how it happens. But it does.

kids are day pupils, which is tiring, but they're happy there.

Thank you - we are leaning towards Tonbridge. Waiting to see if DS2 also gets offered a place - we would love to have them in the same school. Hopefully they will take into account the fact that we want to keep the boys together.
Do you worry about the fact that it is not co-ed?
thank you 🙏🏻

If you want your kids to be in a grounded environment, don’t send them to Wellington. It is chock full of uber-wealthy/celebrity kids. The HMs do their level best with pastoral care/moral education/community service but unfortunately when you are surrounded by that much wealth and entitlement, there’s only so much that can be done.

svevush · 25/11/2023 22:00

This is how we felt unfortunately about Wellington. Much less so about Tonbridge.

May I ask why you didn’t chose Charterhouse as a school? We applied to 6 all offers received including WC. Tonbridge is a little distance from us. Great school but when he boarded there for 3 days football training camp for the Gothia youth cup he wasn’t happy with the accommodation (dusty and unkept), shame really as this was my first choice academically for him. Sports complex is superb.

Faireduski · 26/10/2024 09:25

Ziegfeld: I have heard this multiple times but wishing it wasn't so as everything else looked fantastic for DD but this would be a huge turn off, we are not uber wealthy.... On the open day, there was a brass band in courtyard welcoming parents..... playing the tune to 'Money, Money, Money'....

svevush · 26/10/2024 14:57

Thank you all. We ended up going for Tonbridge and so far so good. Excellent pastoral care & excellent academics. Great housemaster too. London - centric families (not many boys had previously boarded etc) but I guess to be expected.

Awesome.

If you live close to Wellington and your finding it hard to choose between there and Tonbridge then for me as an outsider, it’s an absolute no brainer.

Go for Wellington. A fantastic school on your doorstep.
