Hello, just a quick question is there anywhere that you'll recommend to live in-North England. We are looking for a nice area but also for some diversity as we are a mixed race family I'm thinking south Manchester but it's also quite pricey

Ribble Valley is lovely .

olympicsrock · 13/05/2025 19:52

It’s in Lancashire ( Whalley/ Clitheroe / Longridge etc

Judiezones · 13/05/2025 19:57

If you like Manchester, have a look at surrounding towns where property is cheaper. There are lovely areas of Warrington and it's on the train line to Manchester and Liverpool and near the motorway network. Retail is good, a nice town centre (unlike many towns these days) and retail parks out of town galore (M&S, Ikea etc.)

NorthXNorthWest · 14/05/2025 19:59

What's your budget? How important are the state schools?

MotherOfRatios · 14/05/2025 23:43

Leeds is also diverse

Ellephanting · 14/05/2025 23:47

Manchester is a big city with lots going on. It’s the place of my birth. There are some lovely areas around Manchester, I suggest looking at somewhere that the trams go to. This then gives easy access into Manchester for work, shopping and nightlife.

There are new developments coming in North and East Manchester soon as part of the Gateway regeneration projects. Wouldn’t suggest you live in Moston (close by, although there are nice pockets) but they now have a big African community around Moston Lane with Afro hairdressers, and plenty of all kinds of multicultural shopping so not too far away.

Budget I'd say around £500-600k and a good state school haven't really thought about private

Yes there are many people of colour but I don't know about hairdressers etc. It's so quick to get to Manchester or Liverpool though, where you would definitely find what you need.

It won't get you as much as you would on the North but I personally think South is better. While the schools will change it's worth looking at the Secondary schools and Primary schools and trying to find houses in diverse areas near them. You cannot put a price on a decent state school.

I like my area for the space and access to transport links but it's not particularly diverse.

TokyoSushi · 15/05/2025 19:30

Warrington is very diverse & welcoming, you can get anything at all that you would ever need in Liverpool and Manchester about 20 minutes down the M62 in either direction!

MindfulAndDemure · 15/05/2025 19:45

For South Manchester, look at Didsbury & Chorlton.

A little further afield would get you somewhere lovely for your budget in the ribble valley. If you go for Longridge, Clitheroe, etc, there's easy links in to Manchester, Preston and Liverpool, all within an hours drive.

Unless you’re limiting it to strictly north west, worth looking at Leeds and Sheffield too. I’m a Lancashire lass so I love the north west and definitely recommend Manchester and Liverpool, but the big Yorkshire cities are great too, well connected, friendly and culturally diverse.
