Who has watched Sinners? What a beautiful portrayal of the Black American experience. As a West Indian woman, a lot the story and symbolism hit for me too. I really want to talk about this film with other Black people but hardly anyone has seen it yet. I think I’m being too evangelical with it 😄

Where is it showing? Is it on prime? Netflix?

It’s in cinemas, and I highly recommend watching it on the big screen. Ryan Coogler has really been pushing for it to be watched at the cinema and once you see it, you’ll understand why. The cinematography is unmatched. I don’t know if it will have the same essence on home screens (but of course the story in itself will remain as good!) Also, I was fortunate enough to watch it with a largely Black audience too and there was a real shared sense of understanding at the poignant moments, the nuanced humour, and the love of the music. A great experience all round.

I saw it earlier this week, and really enjoyed it. The music was fantastic, and the mention of Charlie Patton had me nodding my head. I really liked when they had, what to me, was a history of Black music, starting from Africa, and going through the stages, such as the Blues, Rap, Hip Hop ect. Lovely touch.

That scene at the juke joint that showed the transition of Black music throughout the years was really something, wasn’t it! I think it was my favourite scene in the whole film. But there were honestly so many parts that had me thinking “wow” (amongst other thoughts!)

Yes it was such a clever scene to have in the film. The film had me thinking throughout, without being a downer, these people's lives were fraught with danger, and yet they still managed to survive, and produce such amazing music, in the World. What a gift! From Gospel, Jazz, the Blues etc. I also like that we are seeing Black people in different types of roles, that are not typical. Micheal B, is such a talent, and so watchable on screen. Some of the cinematic shots were superb, I loved the shots of the vampires all walking by the side of the barn, and when the main vampire was singing, and they were all dancing around him. And the fight scene between the brothers was slick. Hats off to the director. The fashion at the time was so nice as well.

Ah - I started a thread on the Film board after seeing it a couple of weeks ago. Wasn’t sure whether to start it here instead, so I’m glad to see one here. It was an extraordinary film.

Other thread here:

Thanks for that@MayIDestroyYou. I had not seen that thread.

It’s possibly a bit more superficial - or perhaps just less focused- than the OP is hoping for here.

I really enjoyed it didn't see it on imax which I'm gutted about. SO much symbolism to unpack

Defiantly! Even the Pastor Father, telling Sammie to put down his guitar, triggered memories of being told not to listen to certain music on a Sunday. I have got over that, but there is still a little voice at the back of my head, saying, now, now, no pop music today😁. The sight of the sharecroppers in the fields, and the chain gang digging the side of the road, to the beat of music. Music, such a huge part of the culture, and a vessel for pouring out all that was felt within. Deep.

Moonlightdust · 04/05/2025 20:22

I’ve seen it described as a horror - would you say that it is gory? That’s the only thing putting me off watching!

GoneGirl12345 · 04/05/2025 20:22

I watched it and also loved it. The juke joint scene which showed black music over the ages was stunning.

And I loved the female characters, they were great.

Quite gory, yes. But brilliant too.

MayIDestroyYou · 05/05/2025 09:15

As mentioned on the other thread, I really don’t do horror and sometimes wanted to run away, but it’s honestly worth staying for the vast, poetic vision the film affords.

It is gory but to be honest I don’t think it can even be restricted to being a horror. It’s not scary in the sense of most horrors. I don’t know how to explain it but you’ll understand what I mean once you see it!

I put off watching it because I really don't like horror movies, but I went and I'm so glad that I did.
It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I had to cover my eyes for the gory bits, but the symbolism, the jokes, the fact, as @LadyKenya says, that people didn't only live, but created amazing music.
It was also really thought-provoking. I think I'm going to see it again.

Dweetfidilove · 18/05/2025 14:01

I've seen it with my daughter and we're going to see it again.
The juke joint scene ess spectacular. The evolution of the music and fashion is 👌🏾.
So much history, story and symbolism...
The varied cast...
The conflict between old and new religion/practises .. the subliminals and the discussions the film has provoked...
I'm here for all of it 😊.
