Trying to work out places that I’ll feel safe. We are a mixed race family white dh with a dc.

Wondering where we can move to without he £££ of London that we’ll get on ok. Dc is in secondary school in year 7 and hating it so would have to move schools as well.

@Rosyflamingo This will probably be an unexpected suggestion, but a black female friend (age 60) moved to Belfast a few years ago, has a white Catholic boyfriend, and hasn't experienced any racism at all. No problem getting jobs. The only inconvenience for her is that there are zero black hair salons, as so few black woman in Belfast, so she has to fly back to get her hair done from time to time.

Why I said it's access to ethnic specific facilities that tends to narrow down options not acceptance per se.
We're also looking to move but what restrictis options for us is accessibility to a mixed church and an African market.
All of my close friends are from the same background as me and these are things that are specific to us as African women.

I think London is the only place that accepts mixed race families.

That’s such nonsense. We are a mixed family and have lived in Yorkshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester and haven’t had problems anywhere.

We live in the Reading/Wokingham area. It's a diverse area and my dcs have lots of mixed race friends. I would definitely recommend it. My dcs are themselves from a mixed ethnic background as their dad is from the Middle East.

I think you need think about areas that are suitable beyond acceptance. And to consider areas in terms of integration as well, in terms of cultural comforts and community experience.

Herts has close proximity to London and many area benefit from multiculturalism and what that brings to lived experience. My children once were the only Black children in the school and while people were outwardly accepting, I experienced an absence of comfort from not being around ‘my people’.

Access to shops, shopping, our food, our facilities - hair shops, hairdressers and barbers etc is also worth thinking about.

From my own experience, Herts within the M25 is generally ok.
