Hi I need some advice from black mumsnetters please, could someone help recommend a few products to me.

I've tried watching YouTube reviews I've gone through amazon checking reviews and I just can't find anything that seems right for my hair type.

Everything diverts me back to unsuitable products (images of products melting or brush heads breaking off or the ones that do look good are American products.

I'm looking for two things...one being a hot air brush as I would like to blow out my hair from time to time and I cannot for the life of me be bothered to a hairdryer and struggle to use two hands to do it.

I would also like a straighter that I don't have to spend hours passing over my hair just to have it immediately puff up...I'm aware I need a higher temp but can't seem to work out what would be the best set to purchase.
Any heat protectant recommendations and any general advice would be very welcome.

I would love to hear about both items as sometimes I just want to blow my hair out for braiding so wouldn't necessarily need a straightner for that.

Would be great to hear what items you ladies personally use...and even better if they are budget friendly.

Oh also I've looked at the tymo and watched reviews and it seems it's not quite as good as a good pair of straightners so I'd prefer some alternative ideas to that please and thanks x

My trusted GHDS - you can't beat them. They aren't cheap. They last. When they do finally break, you can sell them on eBay for about £40 plus.

Repair shops buy them, fo them up and sell them on for half the price of new ones with warranty. I've had my pair 7 years.

Hairdryer wise, the overall Dyson Hairdryer (not hairwrap) is my go-to for any kind of hair. Again, it's not cheap, but I've had mine 7 years and no problems with it.

The Dyson hairdresser covers all types of hair.

Tbh, it is very difficult to straighten your own hair, especially at the back. Any hairdresser will tell you that.

You need good hair clips and a tail comb and section it off in fine sections. Pulling the hair through piece by piece, tightly with a tail comb. Set with a quality hairspray. I use Joico, which is what my hairdresser does

I don't use heat treatments. I wash my hair twice a week, maybe three, depending. On one of my weekly washes, I use an intense hair mask conditioner, which I put a comb through and wrap a hair towel around it whilst I finish showering.

I use my ha8rdresser shampoo and conditioner type, which I buy in 1000 ml size online as it works out cheaper

I think we can just all give you ideas of what works for us. You need to play round with what works for you with products for your hair to keep it healthy.

I also sleep with a silk cap on as it keeps my hair from tangling. People also use silk pillow cases instead

Thank you so much, I never thought of ebay..yes I would love to try a pair of ghds as they have been recommended by a friend but I wanted some more opinions as she has very fine hair with loose curls etc she doesn't understand my struggles 😅

I love your tip about wrapping hair after applying deep conditioner, I usually just slap it on, comb it through and pile it up.
I'll definitely be giving that a try.
To be honest I only shampoo once a week or it just dries me out, I've tried so many different shampoos and they just don't leave my hair feeling good. I usually co-wash 3 or 4 times a week and if I have time I apply leave ins..my curls usually look hydrated for a few hours then poof it expands again.

I sleep with a satin bonnet but still wake up a bit tangled.

Used to use GHDS. They do a good job but are absolutely terrible for your hair and will end up causing damage, thinning, breakage etc.
I wear mine curly now but I've seen lots of amazing reviews for Tymo. My sister just got some.

I've heard good things about the tymo too...but the only few youtube vid reviews I could find with people who had a hair type close to my own, claimed they were not that good compared to straightners you could see where it was lacking with regard to smoothness and finished ends.

What about cloud 9s instead of GHDs?

BuntyNuffins · 27/12/2024 03:01

I've just realised I've asked for advice without saying what my hair type is 🙃

*I have curly hair that when hydrated, looks like the number 5. I used to have tighter curls like spirals before I had my last child <10 years ago.

  • it is low porosity (hard to wet, hard to dry) its always been this way, I could dunk my head underwater quickly and come up almost dry.

  • it is medium texture ( it used to be a little more coarse, again before last pregnancy)

  • there is a lot of it, you can't see my scalp easily when parted and each follicle contains a group of hairs.

*There are no remnants of chemical relaxers etc all that was shaved off many years ago.

*Probably a little bleach damage in some places from old highlights...but they are on their way out with trims.

I feel like I've heard of these before but not sure who from...I think ideally I'm looking for something that goes above the standard 180°c. Thanks though, I'll look into them x

@BunBuntyNuffins My hair is not damaged with GHDS, and I use them twice a week all over when washing and drying. Then, usually, just a quick flick through the front once a day.

If you look after your hair properly I have never had a problem. I have a thick mop of wavy hair, though it isn't thick in strand like yours.

I use Joico shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask range. They have different types, which are Joico Colourful, Joico HydraSplash, Joico Defy Damage, Joico Blonde, Joico Moisture Recovery, Joico Colour Endure.

K-Pac is the weekly hair mask. You don't need much of any of their products as they are professional products.

If you shop around online for deals, you can get the 1000 ml of shampoo and conditioner for anywhere between £30-£50 each. I always look for deals, money off vouchers, and use TopCashBack.

I use a 1000ml bottle and a half of shampoo every year and just under a 1000ml bottle of conditioner, too. A couple of 50 ml of the hair mask, probably about £100 per year on average.

You don't get the froth up with it up, that you get with normal hair shampoo from the supermarket, etc.

That's because supermarket etc shampoos, etc. Shampoos, , have a lot of chemicals in them to ensure you see a lather. You don't need a lather.

When washing your hair, the main thing to focus on is the rubbing in of shampoo on your scalp. You don't need to overload the rest of your hair. The conditioner does not need to be rubbed into your scalp either. Just combed through.

Here is a link to Joico products. Once you have worked out what's right for you, then Google for the best deals.

My hair stayed in decent conditioner even when my husband passed 7 years ago. That is down to quality products. They are the most important part

Happy shopping

Thank you for the advice, I've had a brief look at the joico and hopefully I'll find some deals as I can get thru 500ml of conditioner in just over a week as the thickness and amount of my hair is ridiculous, if i were to blow dry it and just comb it out a little with my fingers it would stand up and to the sides 8 inches or more all round and that's not even fully stretched it will still have a little curl pattern in.
When it's hydrated it's hard to tell. I've had hairdressers be shocked, annoyed and often call for backup when dealing with my hair, it's quite the norm for me to have two stylists working on me at once...but I have a few kids now and no time or money for salons so I'm hoping I can find something that works for me on the rare occasion I wanna be smooth and sleek.

I didnt know about the lather thing, I've used some products aimed at my hair type that didn't froth up and I assumed my hair was just too dirty with product buildup to achieve lather.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband, I'm glad you were still able to take care of yourself xx

L'Oreal steampod goes up to 210 Celsius. Can recommend - used to take me about 40 mins to do my whole head on my own. Takes a bit of getting used to as it is a bit bulky. I think I have an older model and pretty sure it was on offer at the time for £120 but I can see the latest generations are closer to £200.

I like keracare products in general. Curlessence range for wearing hair curly and the leave in conditioner is very good IMO. Bog standard shampoo for hair and whatever hydrating conditioner I can find at a reasonable price.

BuntyNuffins · 27/12/2024 19:05

Thank you @Starterlocs I will look into it, though I was hoping to find something under a hundred, it's proving difficult for the quality I need.

Everyone I know, mostly with 4C hair, owns this:

www.very.co.uk/revlon-salon-one-step-hair-dryer-and-styler/1600758733.prd

It's around £30 on Amazon. It'll do the job of drying without damaging. Mine is going strong after 8 years, I use it every couple of weeks.

BuntyNuffins · 29/12/2024 22:19

@Starseeking Thank you!! I have just grabbed this on amazon.

I think my hair is a combination of 3c/4a so it's just soo hard to do. I remember my mum had something similar to this hot brush when I was young and I used to be sneaky and
manage to do a straight "Fringe" with it lol so I'm sure this will work out for me🤞🏽

BuntyNuffins · 30/12/2024 21:50

@Starseeking if you end up coming back to the thread could you please tell me if you get hot air from the whole brush head or if mines a dud..I'm only getting heat from the very top, I've contacted revlon to ask but no reply yet. Also my cool setting is running hot but not sure if that's because I was using the hot setting previously..sorry to be a pain , bt I can't find any info online.

OP posts:
Starseeking · 30/12/2024 22:42

Sounds like there's something wrong with it as you should get hot air from all over. Think I usually use the setting between the strongest hot and the cool one, so it's the medium heat.

Just seen this lady also has one and her washed hair and how her hair comes out is similar to mine:

www.instagram.com/reel/DENgq0YO0ei/?igsh=MW1icm1xdXdpNTl0MA==

Hope you manage to get the issue sorted.

BuntyNuffins · 31/12/2024 01:56

Thank you starseeking, definitely something wrong with mine then..its like the universe doesn't want me to have straight hair 😂The last two days my curls have been juicy for the first time in my life and I just deleted them with the lil bit of heat I got from the hot air brush, I am now just a static puffball until I can get them sorted haha, it was really easy to use though, I was done in 20 ish minutes and the positive is that I managed to blow it out enough to give myself an even trim because I've been "curly cutting" for years
