Moving to Aylesbury

Hello All
I hope my thread finds you all well.

My family and I are moving to Aylesbury in a few months time and I just want to know what the area is like for a black family?

I am a South Londoner born and bred - so anything beyond this is very much alien to me.
is there a black community there that’s welcoming and friendly?
is it easy to get our local foods (plantain, yam, sweet potato, matooke (green banana)?
churches? Hairdressers etc?

I am keen for my son and our family to integrate well as I feel we will be here for a few years at least.

Thank You in advance 🙏🏾

I cannot offer advice about Aylesbury in particular. Have you been, and looked around the area?

So we have been there a few times as hubby’s best friend is there with his family.
It seems kind of rundown in the town centre and full of roundabouts but I haven’t ventured out - I only ever observe these things from the car.

If you are planning on moving there with your son, would it not be in his interest, as well as your own to take a proper scope of the area, and at different times as well. What does your husband's friend have to say about the area? That would give you some ideas.

I know about 4 families that have moved there in the past few years, two from SE London. They love that it's quiet, has great schools, housing is cheap and spacious enough to accommodate visiting relatives and say they mostly go to MK or Luton for bulk African shopping.

Thank you so much for this info - good to know that there is some community there and accessibility to food there.

Husbands friend is white and born and raised in Luton so I don’t think his experience would be the same as ours personally.
He is a big advocate for the move as it means we’ll be local so I believe he’ll have bias naturally.

Hello, please let me know how the move goes. We are thinking of moving to Rainham and I was wondering the same thing re: community, the experience for my children etc. I was born in Herts and was the only black girl in my class so I know how difficult it can be, we then moved to London and I was teased because I was posh haha. Now we want to move out to Kent with my family for space and better quality of life but can't seem to get a feel for it on our day visits.

I've also looked at houses in Aylesbury, they are gorge but just not sure how everyday life will look for us out there.

Good luck with the move :)

Tai ham in Kent or Essex?
I would expect the Essex one to be more diverse knowing what the Medway area is like.

Rainham in Kent (Medway) not Essex. So Essex is Medway as well? Now I'm confused lol

@MultitaskingMumma
There is a Rainham in Kent and a Rainham in Essex.

Aylesbury is very multicultural. Lots of black Caribs from St Vincent, Tobago and surrounding islands. Also large West African communities. Seriously, there is a large black community, also churches & toddler groups. The grammar schools are full of black and south Asian kids. Houses are affordable in comparison to London. Lots of clubs (team sports). I love Aylesbury. No longer live there sadly, but go for it OP.
Tring however, completely different story. Great museum and high street , that's all that can be said.
Feel free to DM me

Aylesbury is set to have even more Nigerians in the coming years as one of the most popular Nigerian churches has opened a satellite church there and there’s an Asian shop selling plantains etc by the high st.
Yes it’s a bit run down but the schools are highly regarded.
