Help please with 4C hair

My foster daughter has 4C hair.

She has lived with me for a long time. When she moved in with us I was completely out of my depth on how to look after her hair.

However, I've learnt a lot!

Generally she has box braids, although has had corn rows, Bantu knots, hair pieces and obviously left it natural etc. She's also had a couple of lace front glue wigs but I didn't make the greatest job of them!

Unfortunately we live in an area which is very white and there's nowhere near to take her and ask for advice.

She's now 17 and has asked for a weave (or a clip in wig).

I'm out of my depth again regarding a weave. Could someone please explain in simple terms exactly what's involved. I've looked on various websites but I think they assume I know more than I do.

I want to do the right thing so any help would really be appreciated!

Hi op,
My children are of mixed heritage (black and white). My eldest daughter has the afro hair. I tend to go paks. It's a hair shop that supplies all products. I would go on there website and maybe get your foster daughter to look on there.

Weave involves someone cornrowing her natural hair down and sewing synthetic (or human hair) “tracks” into the plaits. See image of black persons hair. The hair dresser will often leave a section of the hair out at the front (or sometimes around the circumference of the head), so that it can be combed over the visible tracks and look natural.
A clip in wig is more easier to deal with (but can be more expensive) basically it’s a pre made wig (with the tracks spoken about above onto a wig cap). See image of Blonde wig. The person can just pop it on their head, secure the clips (which can be done in various ways) and they’re done.

Also hair from weaves tend to get discarded after they’re used once. Wigs are more of an investment because they can be washed and used again and again and again.

Paks is a very good shop but I would suggest it for synthetic hair. The human hair from there would be seriously expensive.

Nowadays people use human hair for both weaves or wigs. I know this might sound weird but you can get some reasonably priced hair/pre made wigs on AliExpress. Or ask your foster daughter to have a look on Instagram for preferred vendors.

Hope that helps.
