Good morning

If you have kids in school who are learning computing please tell their teachers about our free classroom resources for Black History Month, thank you.

There's a set of free posters to print, for classroom or corridor walls, featuring Black computer scientists along with a page of pointers to help people find out more about them and their work (and also other people too). A free PDF copy of Issue 29 of the CS4FN schools magazine on diversity in computing, plus other pointers for classroom discussion (e.g. algorithmic bias, facial recognition tech etc).

Available from the Teaching London Computing / CS4FN website or from TES. No registration required.

TES: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/black-history-month-free-computing-resources-secondary-12916033

(The 'London' bit just reflects our initial funding but our resources are free for everyone).

Best wishes
Jo :)

CS4FN = Computer Science For Fun, a free computing-themed magazine and blog for schools which focuses on interesting and inspiring stories about computer science research. We also have 'A Bit of CS4FN' for younger kids. We're funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and one of the things we're trying to do is help to increase the visibility of a diverse range of role models in computing. We are doing this through a series of portals.

Teaching London Computing = our website aimed at computing teachers with lots of free classroom resources.

These look great! My school is about 95% Black / Asian and we sometimes struggle to find resources that represent our demographic.

The film Hidden Figures will also be on television next week.

6.30pm, Tuesday 10th October, FilmFour (and 7.30pm on FilmFour+1).

The film tells the story of three of the African-American women employed by NASA to do calculations for the Apollo programme. Cool film.

Some schools (though it's mostly universities and colleges) are subscribed to the 'Box of Broadcasts' (BoB) from Learning On Screen. This is a service for educational institutions to enable academics etc to show previously broadcast items (and clips taken from them) in their lectures without having to fill in individual licensing forms. BoB also has a copy of the film: https://learningonscreen.ac.uk/ondemand/index.php/prog/0E20ED99?bcast=139266544
