Milton Keynes Schools

Hello this is the 1st of a few threads around MK as I’ve tried to put them all into one and it was just a bit too long winded.

So I did a post a few weeks ago about finding somewhere to live outside of London suitable to raise a young black family and we’ve decided on MK.
In regards to school it doesn’t seem to have the greatest options so we’re considering MK Prep for our children who are currently 6, 5 & 3 years old. However where do they go after? I know it’s still some time away but I do think it’s something to think about.

We’ve found our dream home which is in Wavendon so the east side and I don’t believe we’re in the catchment for any outstanding state or Independent schools on that side. All the threads on here about schools in MK are some years old so I’m not sure that they’re still relevant today.
So I would greatly appreciate it if I could get some recommendations/ suggestions on what to do when it comes to secondary school for my kids.

Also experiences from people living in MK would be a bonus.
Thanks x

Prep schools usually have a leavers destination list that shows where their students typically end up. I suggest you start there.

You can also phone up the school and ask for recommendations

@Rimumof3 you’re welcome. Also if you’re going down the private route. Here’s a non-selective private school that was started by a West Indian couple: www.overstoneparkschool.co.uk

it’s a 30 minute drive from Milton Keynes

their daughter vv brown is a reasonably successful musician too so you can be sure of a well rounded education.

Bedford has a range of excellent independent schools which are favoured by families living in MK. Often accessed by a coach service or train but this has recently been switched to a replacement bus service. A coach would typically leave the east side of MK at 7.20 returning at 16.45 or 18.15 to accommodate after senior school activities. Bedford is a widely diverse town which is reflected in the independent schools, all have provision from nursery. The town and neighbouring villages have a wide range of housing, with a 40min train service into St P, and a direct service to London Bridge in just over an hour The town centre has suffered recently, as have many but there is a wealth of independent shops restaurants, cafes museums with a Victorian riverside embankment running through the town centre. For this reason many families happily migrate to the area. MK was a wonderful place to bring up my family, now in their twenties. We moved into Bedford as they progressed to independent senior school, easier for them and us. If I had my time again, enrolling them in the junior schools would be beneficial as entrance can be competitive.

If you want private secondary you will probably be looking at travelling to Bedford or Northampton.

Or I think the catchment state school for Wavendon would be Walton High. Which is a genuinely comprehensive school, which is reflected by its results (if that's what you are considering makes a school outstanding). Is it the most amazing school ever? - no. Will it most likely serve your children well? - probably.
