A balance is needed though,
As a young black person growing up, my parents drummed into me that to go far in any profession I will have to get used to being the only black face in the room. That it was somehow my duty not to be scared or intimidated, that they will always fear me more than I should fear them. Completely over the top ( my parents were tiger parents on steroids ) but a lot of truth there. It resulted in my entire family going to top universities, Oxbridge , Bristol and Liverpool, all of us had very very few black friends at university, and in my corporate life again I often take a seat in meetings where I'm the only black face in the room.
Its fucking hard, and you need to be tougher than the white student to survive it, its that simple and I'm glad my parents didn't dress it up.
I rejected a place at a prestigious prep school attended by the children of the rich and famous, well known goverment figures, reassuringly expensive fees, I did this as I knew my black child would probably be the only black face in the class. I've kept them at a much more mixed prep in the suburbs, BUT I did tell the school I wished to remain registered for 7+ entry, when DC is a bit older and can handle it more.
Personally I wouldn't encourage my child to choose a university based on diversity, where does it stop? I wont become a top barrister or a Group Chief Executive of a global bank, because the vast majority are white?
They have to find ways to survive, when I was at university, I found the international students groups a source of finding black friends, and I found them, local black non-student groups was another source, any town in the UK has them, you do what you can to keep sane.
Its hard, its hard being black in a horrificly racist country
Anyway, Its a lot to put onto young shoulders, and I admit I'm a tiger parent who wants their DC to take over the entire world, and that's fucked up for some people. But when Obama wanted to president how many people told him not to go there? And that road started when he attended Harvard Law , one of the most prestigious law schools in the world, each year it takes around 1,700 students , last year in the 2020's never mind when Obama attended, 60 were black.
