I know there’s a thread elsewhere but can we please talk about Nope here.

Have you seen it? What did you think? Were you as awestruck and thrilled and moved and frankly gobsmacked at its brilliance as I was?

Maybe I don’t get out enough, but I’m not sure I’ve seen a film before where a Black American family owns vast swathes of ranch land, about which they make all the decisions without interference from oppressive authorities. (If there are others, please share!)

And I’m not sure any film since The Accidental Tourist has shown such an intriguing sibling relationship. I know Jordan Peele said in an interview that it was something rarely shown through Black characters. It made me wonder why I’ve been subjected to decades of pointless nonsense about luuuurve and romance, with or without an intimacy coordinator.

I could go on. Truly amazing film.

Much preferred over Peele’s last film, Us. Think it rates up there with Get Out with the performances and narrative. I was pleasantly surprised by the eventual threat, since I tried to avoid any of the later trailers that hunted at things where the teaser made it totally unknown.

MuddlerInLaw · 18/08/2022 16:00

It’s both much more vast in scope than Get Out and far more nuanced.

I may have to go back and watch Us now, even though I hate horror films generally. Though I’ve forgotten whether that was also considered groundbreaking or not.

After watching itbi can now join the thread. The movie is genius

MuddlerInLaw · 30/08/2022 19:01

Three people on this board have seen it?

Three!

I saw it at the weekend. Loved it.

debbrianna · 31/08/2022 11:30

There is a possible follow-up. Sequel. Great idea. I could not stop laughing through out. It was amazing how the concept of NOPE appears through the movie 😁

debbrianna · 31/08/2022 11:31

I literally kept on going Nope, Nope, not at everthonh. The placement to the title was genius

debbrianna · 31/08/2022 11:37

It was also really nice seeing a black family who owns things passed on through generations they are fighting to keep—a generic farm with history taken over by an alien.

The concept of a villain is was geniuis. It was brief but seeing that photographer get sucked up by the alien was joy to watch.

Yes. It was their ownership of land, and freedom from human interference there that elevated this film to quite another level for me. The way he thereby forced the (firstly American) audience to a different perspective on the siblings. It was one of the most beautiful authorial acts I’ve ever seen.

I thought it was fantastic

MuddlerInLaw · 31/08/2022 12:53

Care to say why, Pruella?

And Motnight?

A sequel, debbrianna? Interesting …

I rewatched the trailer for Us - but it doesn’t look like my sort of thing, and I really don’t think I could watch it on my own.

You should. It's not as scary. It's more thought-provoking instead. I think that's why JP is great. You always come out thinking instead of time wasted.

I see Nope is available to rent on Prime now, though at a terrifying price!
