School Uniform and Hair

I'm due to discuss the uniform policy at my Governors meeting.
Girls are not allowed to have unnatural coloured hair, beads or braids - no exclusion of anything else eg Afro hair.

Unnatural coloured hair extends to black girls lightening their hair but does not include white girls with black hair who lighten their hair.
I've quickly read around the subject and understand that braiding has been successfully challenged and that natural hairstyles are supported by the Teaching Unions.

Has anyone approached their school about hair and uniform policy?

Well done for raising this!

School policies are often cut & pasted from earlier ones without much thought. In my experience, Governors are usually quite reasonable if challenged politely. My DS’s school had some very outdated rules about visible tattoos for staff and volunteers, and these were changed as soon as someone questioned them.

Great result! I'm so glad my own kids' school is so laid back on everything the head would be horizontal if he could be - lots of the kids have braids, think most of the black girls do to be honest. The only restrictions are we periodically get reminders to knock the ridiculous hair accessories down when they get to the point they're in danger of picking up Sky telly again.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts.
I'd looked at the Halo link earlier and will bringing this.
Plus I really liked the specification of hair colours.

Re beads. I think this is less easy than braids to speak up for, especially as I don't know why they aren't allowed. I was thinking health and safety would be odd?
Perhaps it's the bead colours?
Does anyone know why they would not be allowed, apart from cultural ignorance of course!

In my school, which is about 5% white, regarding beads in braided hair, if the hair is long with beads throughout the length, then they would be expected to tie back the length as long braids that have beads on the ends can cause accidents if the student turns round quickly. This additional rule came about after we had one student get accidentally hit in the eye by the beads when the student in front of them turned round quickly.
Other than that, anything goes!
