How much is your weekly food shop?

Hi everyone

I know that this question has probably been posed sooo many times on the main board but wanted to know from an ethnic perspective how much you family weekly food shopping cost to compare as we all know that in addition to mainstream food items we also buy different staples ie seasonings, meat, palm oil, pounded yam, veg eg okra, plantain, spinach etc which is an additional cost

How many people in your family?

How often are you doing the 'African food shop'?

I often watch'Eat well for less' but have not seen a fully African family who buy similar items to us and wondered whether we are over spending or not

Currently food shop as follows

Asda £20
Lidl around £35
Sainsburys £10
African Food Shop £35 on average (this includes meat, indomi noodles, seasonings, hot peppers, palm oil, egusi etc)

So on average for a family of 4 we are spending £100 pw, does this sound about right, 2 kids are school age, so no nappies etc though shopping includes cleaning items too

Particularly interested in families from black African or Caribbean communities

I am not African or Caribbean but I am in a family of 4 and we spend around 100pw, I actually budget £600 per month for food and house supplies so this allows for some flex.

Thanks for the response, I guess that we are spending the correct amount then, it's just every week I have this feeling that we are spending way too much on food, but as we are mainly WFH, rarely eat out etc, I guess this is why the cost is so high

I'm Caribbean and husband West African with two sons aged 3 and 6. No nappies anymore.
I think I easily spend about £100 pw. I did a large Tesco shop online yesterday of around £150 but a mix of things. I had some frozen food delivered from Iceland of £60 or so.
By next week I will have to top up on fish and veg.
I have a good stock of seasoning but will pick up plantain and peppers in the next few days plus ackee which has increased in price.
I would usually stop at M&S once a week after school run and spend £60 but the increase in food prices has made me rethink and return to Tesco for club card savings.

I’m white but I eat a lot of yam, plantain and okra, blackeye beans etc and live near a Carribean grocer.

In household of 3 adults we were spending around 110-20 per week. It’s now gone up to around 150 per week.

Sounds like you’re doing well.

There are better alternatives than palm oil.

Have you tried online supermarkets for your specialist items op?

I’ve had mixed results with them.

I spend about £35pw for a family of three, but we're bargain hunters and no fussy eaters!

Orchidflower1 · 02/07/2022 18:51

Oh my @NeverFlyCoach how do you manage that?? Do just just mean food in that price?

Wow that's impressive. WFH a lot I really aim to reduce my weekly food cost because we should have more time to cook.
