Hair & body products for DD

Hey guys! Hope all is well:)

Just to be clear, I'm looking for suggestions/advice from Black Women (and any Black Men that may be on here ofc!) and am not looking for the opinions of non Black people. Hence why I'm posting on this board in particular.

I currently have a DD who's turning 6 months tomorrow. From when she was born up until now, I've only used olive oil for her skin and hair and castile soap to bathe her with.

I have 4C hair and even though I think my daughter is too young to tell just yet (she has a little afro with SO much hair and very tight curls) I'm sure she'll have either 4A/4B or 4C hair as she gets older.

Her hair is always growing and I wondered what other products are good for her hair type at this age?
I rather stay with natural products (recently I've started moisturising her hair with pure Ghanaian Shea butter) as I'm not a fan of products with so many chemicals.
I'm also not going to use any Cantu products, Dark & Lovely or anything along those lines😂

I also wondered what else I could use to bathe her with too? I'm not a fan of Johnson's, Dove and so on so the typical things you can buy from a Supermarket does not appeal to me at all!

My auntie is a natural guru so I've asked her but also wondered what the lovely people of BNM has to say? Thank you in advance:)

Hi, OP. Blackity Black here 🖐🏽😆

I'm not sure I can help with current products as my children are much older but I just wanted to ask if what you're using is still working for your baby, is there a reason you want to change? It seems you're using great products already.😊

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will come around soon to help but was curious to know if you have a particular reason to change them.

To be honest I don't really know😂

I just assumed that because she was getting a little older and her hair is growing longer, we're supposed to change the products we use on her? DP has also been asking if we can use something different for DDs skin and hair (I think it's because he's used to using products bought in Supermarkets even though they have so many unnecessary ingredients in them) so that's probably been throwing me off!

Ah. I see. Thanks for clarifying. I get the urge to change things sometimes but I'd advise sticking to what's working till it isn't. I know I've gone to experiment on new stuff several times and learned the hard way.😄

But I'm not exactly answering your question so hopefully you get recommendations and you find more products that work. SmileFlowers

Yeah I was thinking the same thing to be honest! I should stick to what I know as I don't want to try anything new and she has a reaction or it causes any problems.

Hopefully I'll have some recommendations that I can do some research on and just keep them in mind for the futureSmile

For body care in particular, but they do have shampoos in their ranges :

  • Child's farm products are suppose to be natural and are easy to get as supermarkets sell them. (I've had random samples for my DD.)
  • Aveeno products have lots of natural ingredients and you can buy them in Boots. (I've used their creams as I have eczema/dry skin.)

For hair apparently you can use the products you use on your hair if your hair is similar to theirs.

If it's not broken don't fix it. Sometimes the raw products have smells that I can't cope with..

hibye123 · 03/11/2021 21:21

I've briefly looked into Aveeno products and would definitely consider using them at some point. I've never looked into Child's Farm but may give it a look, thank you!
I definitely wouldn't use my shampoo and conditioner on DD as I know it has so much unnecessary chemicals that wouldn't be good for her little head but will keep that in mind

It's true! I may just stick with what I already use as there isn't really any need to switch it up just yet. I agree regarding the smells😂 I absolutely HATE the smell of coconut oil. The smell and the texture are both yuck😵‍💫

@hibye123 just wondering what you went for in the end. I'm looking for hair oil/moisturizer for my baby.

alilstressed · 23/03/2022 06:06

I use child's farm body washes for my children. We all use aveeno lotions.
When both were smaller I would use sweet almond oil on their hair. My son's hair is 4b/c and my daughter's is 4c.
