Hood Feminism

"Hood Feminism"

Has anyone read this? Just downloaded this on audible. Looking forward to listening later. There are quite a few reviews. And this touches on all the topics that we have all been talking about.

Summary
Bloomsbury presents Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall, read by Mikki Kendall.

"I'm a feminist. Mostly.
I'm an asshole. Mostly.
All too often the focus of mainstream feminism is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few.

Meeting basic needs is a feminist issue. Food insecurity, the living wage and access to education are feminist issues. The fight against racism, ableism and transmisogyny are all feminist issues.

White feminists often fail to see how race, class, sexual orientation and disability intersect with gender. How can feminists stand in solidarity as a movement when there is a distinct likelihood that some women are oppressing others?

Insightful, incendiary and ultimately hopeful, Hood Feminism is both an irrefutable indictment of a movement in flux and also clear-eyed assessment of how to save it."

Interesting that they include transmisogyny but not sexism. Which surely is your very basic feminist principle.

I hadn’t heard of this. I’ll have a google. Reading the excerpt there I’ll be interested whether they mean race, trans, or something else when they talk about women oppressing other women and “increasing privilege for the few”.

Talking of ‘gender’? Feminism doesn’t centre gender. There does seem to be attempts to split the feminist movement along race lines (why is that - divide and conquer?). Which is odd considering the current feminist ‘faces’ in in the U.K.

Based upon the writer's experiences of life in a deprived part of Chicago. Not for me, I don't support the concept of intersectional feminism.

Interesting opinions! I'll report back! 😊

You know, I've spent well over half a century of my life fighting for womens and childrens rights, and against racism. When I started speaking up, and getting into trouble, back in the day, there was no "equality" legislation at all.

I always listen and watch things, I'm always learning, I don't live in a rigid box with a political label on it.

So the squatter who turned up on here, muttering about theory labels, at the same time invading a Black womens space to hector us, as to how we should think, shows how politically tone deaf they must be.

If you just read what you agree with, your mind set gets smaller and smaller. I'll. watch and listen to what I please and make my own mind up.

A while ago now, I was hectored on MN by a " white feminist" ( as opposed to a Feminist, who happens to be white. There is a HUGE difference in my book). She announced that she had been fighting for womens rights for 5 years.! So I'm still 60 years ahead at least.

I think the plopper has just emphasised the points outined in the OP. Thanks for that.

Our lives aren't a "concepts of intersectional feminism". We are not a "concept", whatever the hell that content elusive little rant is supposed to even mean.

Our lives are REAL- not some academic label plonked on us.

BMN that doesn't mean we all think exactly the same ( thank goodness).

To OP
Haven't heard it, thanks for posting the info, and I will listen for sure. Smile

Having said that.

I'll be extremely disapppointed indeed, if SEX is not referred to as in Female.

Going to listen, later 😊

@1Saymynamesaymyname
I've had an ice lolly. I've cooled down. Grin

There's a discussion booklet on it here, I've just found, quite lengthy but worth a look? It will keep my brain going, at any rate!

I'll pop it on the other relevant thread on here too,

Thanks, echo. I'll have a look.

I've just been reading it. Heart sinking a bit

  1. It's the hijacked language, don't call me "cis". You can make the point validly without doing that.
  2. Having said that, to misquote Muhammed Ali. No trans person ever called me the N - word.

Will listen right through however.

debbrianna · 24/07/2021 16:26

I am going to read it too. Can we do like a discussion on it in about a week?

EchoNan · 24/07/2021 16:42

Hey, I'd enjoy that debbriana.

EchoNan · 26/07/2021 23:04

So, I've bought this in paperback.
I'm about a third of the way through.
I'm a bit Confused, so far.

I want to say to her, stop using the language of a White Male Sexologist to describe Women. Make your point without the adopted guff.

I'll stick with it, but that, and the fact that she " loves guns" ( admittedly not on the street) in the chapter on gun violence, irks me.
Still, a fair bit to go yet.
