I'm glad that she is finally getting some justice. She was a victim of institutional sexism and also racism in my opinion. Her conviction was to the letter of the law but it definitely definitely was not in the spirit of the law.

I too am pleased with this. It always felt wrong given all of the circs that they went straight to dismissal. I also assumed there was a mix of misogyny and/or racism somehow at play here - only because it seemed a strange decision on its merits alone.

MrsBunHat · 17/06/2021 10:43

Yes I've always been really confused by this case, it seems clear that she wasn't responsible. And if it happened as reported, I can't see a senior white male PO getting into trouble over it.

I thought it was done and dusted so I'm really glad she's appealed and won.

TBH her actual conviction was very very harsh but technically right because possessing child sexual abuse images is a strict liability offence (as far as I know because I'm not a lawyer/policeman) so if it goes to court there's no argument of intent or nuance with the circumstances.

Justice is a blunt instrument.

Real paedophiles are very devious and strong laws are needed. But regular people sometimes unwittingly share these images on social media for the shock and gossip value and often with little realisation that it's a very serious offence to do so, and moreover that this offence is treated very differently to other offences.

My understanding is she deleted it - the idea that I could be found guilty of being in receipt of an unsolicited image is frankly petrifying.

What I don't quite understand is what she did once she understood what it was. Did she ignore it? I would be more concerned about that.

Her sister should have reported the image and not sent it on, that seems a clear criminal offence to me. However NRW is the only one convicted?

Foul play for sure.

From my understanding she did what I have done and other people should do too. Block images and videos on your WhatsApp. What this means is, you can see blurry content image which can stop you opening images and videos that you do not want on your phone.

Remember that, if you have google photos with automatic saving. Not only will your phone store content of those images being sent but also your Google images.

Yes she got convicted on a technicality.

I saw one of the police programs and they used that law to put a previously convicted paedophile back behind bars.

Plenty of non-white police officers have spoken up about how the police forces target black and Asian officers for investigation and disciplinary action. Two female Asian ex-officers have spoken up loudly in the last year about it. One, Shabnam Chaudhri, was doing a lot of interviews in the media about it. I remember because she did an interview with Nick Ferrari and seemingly shocked him by saying the police still have a big race problem. He regularly hosts Cressida Dick on his program who claims the opposite.

C130 · 18/06/2021 10:15

This is why imo Cressida Dick is doing a massive disservice to black and Asian people. How you can have the top brass in the Met denying that there is a fundamental problem with racism within it, is staggering. That she should be so tone deaf and blind to the stats that expose again and again that black people are treated unfairly by the police. The amount of stop and search being conducted on black people, more than any other group. All of the black people who have met their demise, coming into contact with the police. It angers me so much that she can sit there and talk such rot.
