Living in Italy as a black person

CarBusTrain · 21/05/2021 15:59

Hi, does anyone have any experience of living in Milan as a black person? My Italian husband has been offered a role in central Milan and I'd like any advice of 'more' diverse areas in Milan to live as a mixed couple. TIA

I haven't looked but I reckon you'll find a YouTube video

CarBusTrain · 23/05/2021 07:46

Thanks Nurse. I've started watching some YouTubers as well as some people on Instagram as well. Although I haven't come across any information on areas to live per se just general information on life in the city which is still very useful.

Hi, I'm white so hope you don't mind me replying, but I live in a different part of Italy and have found facebook groups the most useful source of practical info in English (not sure if you speak Italian). You could try Expats in Milano, Milan international group, Milano expats, Mothers of Milan, Living in Italy.

CarBusTrain · 23/05/2021 16:59

@LeeMiller no I absolutely don't mind you replaying. I will try asking in the groups you've suggested.
I have basic Italian but will be working my way to B1 level this year in order to get my citizenship.
If you don't mind me asking, are you a Brit living in Milan and what your experience has been?

The area around Viale Tunisia - near Porta Venezia has had an Eritrean community for decades, and gets nicknamed ‘Asmarina’. asmarinaproject.com. The wider neighbourhood is now very gay-friendly and welcoming - also hella expensive.

LeeMiller · 23/05/2021 18:53

I'm a Brit but not living in Milan (I'm very happy to answer any questions about living in Italy generally but I think life in Milan is probably quite different to where I live in Tuscany, the biggest city I've lived in is Florence which is a lot smaller and less cosmopolitan).

I'm also married to an Italian but have been putting off applying for my citizenship because I can't face the bureaucracy, though I really should post-Brexit. Getting to grips with the language greatly enhanced my experience of living in Italy though. Good luck!

@orinocosfavoritecake Thanks for the reply. We are aiming to stay south of the centre possible around Ticinese / Porta Romana and Porta Venezia area would add too much time to our journey as we plan to see the in laws very often through the week.

@LeeMiller yes learning the language is my top priority after sorting out where to live. I am following a few people living in Milan on yt and insta so I am good for general info. It's the knowledge on areas that I am trying to work out.
Also I've the Al femminile forum. Have you heard of it and would it be a good source of info?

I used the Al femminile forum when I was pregnant for a couple of specific questions and got helpful replies but I haven't explored it beyond that. My impression is that it's narrower in scope than mumsnet and not especially widely used, but it might be worth a shot. Most Italians I know tend to use facebook/instagram rather than forums.

CarBusTrain · 25/05/2021 07:16

@LeeMiller thanks I'll hunt down some more Facebook/Instagram people to follow

I'm white too but was born in Milan Smile

If you want to stay south of the centre my mum grew up in the Inganni/Lorenteggio area of Milan which is very multicultural.
They are in the middle of adding a new tube line too.
