My daughter-in-law is African American and my son is white (well, pinkish actually). They have a new baby and in time I would like to buy him a book of classic fairy stories. I would like the illustrations to show people with varied, including brown skin colours. Does anyone have any recommendations? TIA

@surabayajenny what a sweet gesture. One of my absolute favourite books is "Last Stop on Market Street". It's a sweet book about a boy who takes the bus with is grandma. It's beautifully illustrated by Chris Robinson whose style I love and he's also Black. I genuinely cried at the end of the book and I'm a grown up without kids!

Here's the synopsis:

CJ begins his weekly bus journey around the city with disappointment and dissatisfaction, wondering why he and his family can't drive a car like his friends. Through energy and encouragement, CJ's nana helps him see the beauty and fun in their routine.

This beautifully illustrated, emotive picture book explores urban life with honesty, interest and gratitude.

Last Stop on Market Street has won multiple awards and spent time at the number one spot in the New York Times Bestseller List.

Not fairy tales, but there are some great suggestions of books for young children here: enough.scot/2020/07/21/searching-for-a-decolonised-childhood-resources-for-young-children/

Thanks for these ideas which are all great. He's only 4 months so there will be plenty of birthdays and books to buy in the future. Hoping for more responses but actually wondering whether there's not much out there??

My daughter has a lot of the story orchestra which are wonderful and include my traditional tails with illustrations that depict diversity in the characters

They may be something for the future .

I have often looked at the publisher to find more of ranges of those books 📖 I love

Eg Beaver books
Firetree books
Barefoot books

I would say when find a book you like look at who the publisher is

Also Shop mybookbasket.com/collections/treats-for-little-ones

Happy hunting
