Can anyone recommend a good facial products please. I have a lot of dark spots and uneven skin tone.I just don't know what will work for my black skin. I feel, most of the products advertised are aimed at white skin so I don't want to waste money on something that might not work for me.

Thank you.

I have mixed race skin which is weirdly spotty yet dry and I find the simple skin care fantastic. It is what it says .... simple!

Works for dd teen skin and I know several friends who use it and they have a range of skin tones and types.

Following a recommendation from a friend I’m also trying the Aldi range- I ordered it and it was delivered last night so I can’t comment yet but I can come back in a day or two if you’d like.

My ex SIL ( also MR but different heritage) swore by Clinique but tbh I didn’t find any difference between that and the simple range - bar the price!

Could you order a few travel size bits maybe from simple/ Clinique/ Superdrug vitamin e and have a go. There should be enough in travel size to give you a weeks worth which should help form a judgement.

In the dim and distant past of samples from beauty counters, I never really thought they were big enough to give a true idea.

I’ve heard encouraging things about Rihanna’s Fenty Skin range being good for black skin. It’s available at Boots and looks great.

Planning to splurge on it when I’ve used up the half empty packs in my bathroom...

Mixing pure glycerin with any body cream is good idea. I have never found the perfect cream. I make do with glycerin in normal everyday creams like those from superdrug or boots as hot tired of trying to track down creams. The others I know off which are really great and makes the skin really smooth and glow are fade creams which are a form of bleaching creams which I don't use. My cousin uses it.

I get hyperpigmentation around my mouth even though I use factor 50 all year round. To clear it, I use Eucerin spot corrector which comes in a tiny tube with what looks like a cotton bud applicator. It’s £16 from Boots but during lockdown, I bought it from Amazon with free delivery.

I apply it to the darker area at night after cleansing and usually put nothing on top so that it can work overnight without being diluted. Maybe once a week, I will put some night cream on top to keep it moisturised.

It probably takes around four weeks to clear the dark patch if I have let it get really bad, less time if I have caught it early.

Like Orchidflower1, I’ve just bought Aldi’s Lacura products, Rejuvelate day and night cream plus serum on the back of another thread plus lots of personal recommendations. I also have the rose oil set. I’ll let you know how I get on but even after two nights, the night cream has left my skin very moisturised the next morning.

I’ve been using Superdrug’s Naturally Radiant day and night cream, hot cloth cleanser and pads for a few years and they have been ok but I think my skin is changing or possibly has got used to them.

Check out Dr Alexis Stephens' channel on YouTube. She is a black dermatologist who is excellent! Loads of videos tackling different skin issues.

Palmers cocoa butter is good for evening skin tone.

sugarlost · 29/03/2021 20:25

Dr Vanita Rattan on you tube for people of colour...lots of videos including pigmentation problems.
She does not recommend fragrance in products for people of colour ..she explains why in videos.. I believe Fenty products have fragrance so she doesn't recommend ..I believe she did a review of products.

Cerave is a good fragrance free brand formulated with dermatologists...look at reviews online.

I'm using The Ordinary Azelaic Acid suspension 10% for dark spots. This formula is apparently gentle on our skin and I've had no problems but only recently used it. You need to use a high SPF when using this.
I have also got Mandelic Acid 10% from The Ordinary also apparently gentle on our skin which I will use when I finish the other product... again SPF needed.

Ok a mini update on the Aldi serum and night cream. Granted it’s only been used twice but this morning my skin was not tight in the places it normally feels tight. Obviously not the most scientific report ever but I’m carrying on.

Using simple in the morning and Aldi at night for the rest of the week- I’ll see how I get on!

The range for Ren is great. It works well for black skin.

PonDeReplay · 08/04/2021 21:21

@sugarlost - thanks for recommending Dr Vanita Rattan’s YouTube channel. I’m not OP but have been wanting to improve the way I care for my skin. I’m watching some of her videos and am learning so much.

I swear by black soap for my face. It is soo drying, but I counter that by massaging my face with shea butter or in the warmer months, organic sweet almond oil.

JingsMahBucket · 16/04/2021 17:09

@debbrianna what do you Usero recommend from The Ren? My regular facial cleanser I use in the shower is running out and I want to try something new.
debbrianna · 16/04/2021 19:06

Daily use , boots vitamin c brightening cleansing gel, the night cream I use it during the day and add glycerin during the night. Ren at the moment I have the glycolic lactic radiance renewal mask, and weekday ren micro polish cleanser. There used to be a 3 min min flash rinse but it's disappeared. I used that one for about give to six years.

I get a lot of dead skin and exfoliating is more what I do with my face. Dry brush my body or use exfoliating gloves for the body stleast every two days.

cReateAusername · 14/05/2021 11:13

I use the ordinary plant derived squalane oil at night it’s been amazing plus their niacinamide helps with pigmentation areas.
I have moved up to factor 50 spf but they all leave me looking quite chalky 😞

Orchidflower1 · 15/05/2021 12:49

@cReateAusername I’ve been told that factor 40+ is actually not necessary and can clog pores- this applies to all skin types and unless you are of albino skin type that it’s much better to reapply any products that you require SPF from rather than using a high factor.

Dd biology teacher told me- she used to be a lab technician/ researcher/ biologist for boots. Why she moved to secondary biology teaching is beyond me but that’s a whole different thread!

Interesting about spf. I watched an episode of jackie Aina and she roustabout spf making makep look grey on dark skin after a few hours. Still wear it under makeup but use a strong colour bronzer just incase. I used to love Fashion becuase their makeup had spf combined in the foundation.
