Help 4C Hair

Hi

I would really appreciate your help ...

I am a white woman. My adopted daughter is black with 4C hair.

We've never really had an issue with her hair before as I take her to an Afro Caribbean hairdressers who braid her hair and give us lots of really helpful advice.

However, during lockdown they are obviously not open and I'm struggling to help her.

Her braids are currently out and she has natural hair.

She is asking for a wig. She is nearly 17 years old so I'm happy for her to have one.

However I am completely out of my depth and don't know where to start. We've looked at various videos but I want to ensure that, for the first time, she gets the easiest one to put on and which will look most realistic.

Excuse my ignorance ...

I can't easily work out the difference between lace front wig and others etc.

Would her hair need to be in cornrows under the wig?

I am happy to spend more on a decent one for her. Can you suggest a good place to get one.

Can they be used over and over again?

ANY advice would be really appreciated. I just want to do the right thing for her.

I feel like I'm letting her down!!!

Please help, starting with the very basics.

Thanks.

Do you have the stylist's number? You could call or email/WhatsApp for advice.

But here's a link to a blog on how to care for 4c hair. Hair density and porosity still differs between each 4c head of hair and these determine how the hair will react to hair products. There should be a lot of YouTube videos on this.

Moisture is the no 1 product 4c hair needs and regularly.

Note that when you hear 'shine' when someone's talking about 4c hair, I'd suggest you ignore it because 4c hair isn't naturally shiny and any shine you give it will only be temporary. It doesn't typically retain shine and many 4c hair owners have broken their backs trying to constantly maintain shine because their hair is always compared to other curly hair types as well as straight hair types.

Concentrate on hair health - a healthy 4c hair is healthy - with or without shine - and this knowledge will help you and your daughter to not have unrealistic expectations of her hair.

She doesn't need a wig if she takes good care of her hair but if she really wants a wig, here's a link to a natural hair texture wig shop.
She doesn't have to corn row her hair. It just needs to lay flat and a wig cap can help with that. However, she can have some corn rows if that helps to lay the hair flat.

This is also an important article for 4c hair care. It will help you and your daughter to understand the importance of taking care of her natural hair and not just depending on braids and wigs. Those are accessories.

I'll also suggest you ignore any part of any article or video that says to not wash/shampoo hair regularly. Scalp and hair NEED to be cleaned at least once a week. Hydrating and moisturising shampoo will help with not stripping the hair.

Thanks. We have always looked
after her hair when it's out of braids. Her hairdresser said that it's in really good condition and has been taken care of well.

She's never had a weave or wig before and I think I she just wants to try one as it's now been a long time that her hair has been natural.

I'll check out the links.

Thanks!

Ali express is a good site to order hair from. Go with the highest reviews as their is so much choice.

Wigs are better and look my natural if you get them made rather than just ordering a wig already made. I can appreciate this may be difficult in lockdown. Can your DD search on Instagram? There’s so many wig makers.
