Hi,

Can anyone give recommendations? I have tried coconut and jojoba oil in the past as well as some creams... can't remember the names.

I had this problem and tbh only a prescribed steroid cream helped the itchiness. And then I used a coconut oil and avocado oil mix which maintained it.

I'm sure someone will be along with more suggestions

Thanks @Dastardlythefriendlymutt. My scalp seems to have got worse since the weather became colder.

Once I stopped using shampoos with paragons and sulphates my scalp cleared up. You might be doing this already, but if you aren't maybe give it a try.

panachronic · 03/01/2021 18:46

That should read parabens not paragons! Damn autocorrect Smile

partyatthepalace · 03/01/2021 18:52

steroid wash was the only thing that worked quickly.

Beyond that I have to avoid cheap high street shampoo (sadly) and burning my scalp (!)

sugarlost · 03/01/2021 19:38

Thanks for your replies. Yes was already using a gentle shampoo without sulphates. Will check for parabens.
I also think fragrance irritates my scalp.

If you are using a shampoo without sulphates and careful with what conditioners you are using then you need to talk to your GP.

This is because you could either have a dermatitis (eczema), a fungal infection, a bacterial infection or a mixture and need something prescribed.

As lots of GPs are doing remote appointments at the moment you need to get someone to take pictures of your scalp in good light.

sugarlost · 09/01/2021 10:56

@RedMarauder thanks for your advice, I never thought of contacting my GP.

I used organic sunflower oil (supermarket cooking oil) on my scalp. Cleared right up. Its the oil most like the skins natural oils.

I have dermatitis which leaves my scalp incredibly dry, itchy and flakey. I find the only shampoo that keeps it under control is Nizarol. You can buy this from Boots and most pharmacies. I also find that using a sulphur mix keeps my scalp hydrated. My go to is Sulphur 8 light, used twice a week.

sugarlost · 08/02/2021 15:40

Thanks for your feedback@Fml2015 and @Maze76

Squalane oil (I use the ordinary) is soothing and moisturising and calms irritation

Sugarintheplum · 12/02/2021 22:25

I actually find my hair is itchy and flaky when `I apply oil to my scalp. So I usually just put it on my hair and it naturally runs down to the shaft.

I find this with my babies too, Head perfectly fine. I mess with it, start plastering oil on their scalp etc after bath time and in no time at all they had cradle cap. Same thing every time and `I just couldn't help myself. Like most other black women I know, I just love waxing my children down with some cream or oil!!!

Dowhatnoway · 13/02/2021 20:57

As Maze76 said Nizarol helped with my really itchy and flaky scalp. Once it settled I moved to simple shampoo and conditioner and my scalp has never been better. I was surprised as it's quite cheap too.

MoiJeJous · 08/03/2021 21:00

I know this is an old thread but in case it helps someone - I also use Sulfur8 shampoo and scalp oil. It worked very well for me until my dermatitis got worse.

sugarlost · 11/03/2021 17:59

@MoiJeJous thanks for your response

My wife's family have Eczema so we get raw Shea butter. She melts it and mixes it with olive oil and fingers it on hers and my daughters scalp. She does this about once a week I think. They wash their hair every 1-2 weeks but don't use shampoo every time. Sometimes it's a 'co wash'.

They're also very religious about drinking water and staying hydrated. Water is so important for your skin!

(and you probably know this so I'm not trying to lecture but I didn't see anyone mention it so I'm putting it out there for anyone who reads this thread for advice)

They're also both natural, if you can avoid using relaxer or gels in your hair I'd strongly encourage you to go natural it really helps.

Get as much sun as you can, if you work in an office eat your lunch in a park/garden outside. Take vitamin supplements and/or eat vitamin rich food particularly vitamin D

My brother in law gets eczema worse when he drinks milk or eats milk chocolate so he avoids both and those foods mildly affect one of my sisters in law but it doesn't seem to affect the rest of the family. It took a long time for him to figure out what food was the issue and he did it by cutting one (phosphorus) food out at a time.

QueenPaw · 12/03/2021 11:16

This stuff is really good, I like their conditioner too

@SkedaddIe thank you for your feedback. My scalp is much better then when it was when I relaxed my hair.. I've been natural for some time.

I'm quite good with my water intake, take Vic and d and my diet is good.

I will try and get out in the sun more..funny I was thinking of this earlier today.

I also have a small amount of diary in my diet and red meat as I think it causes inflammation. I try and be careful with my sugar intake.

I'll try that scalp mix!

Thanks againGrin

@QueenPaw thank you for the link...I think I may try that cream if the Shea butter mix doesn't work for me.
