Just got an email inviting me to this, if anyone's interested.

Definitely 👍🏾

It was excellent by the way!

boohooyoutoo · 27/10/2020 22:32

Gutted I missed it 😢

PompomDahlia · 27/10/2020 23:13

I missed it! But currently watching the channel 4 doc on Afro hair.

A lot of it resonates with me. I've been working for 10 years and in that time I've never gone into the office with my natural hair down. Growing up with no-one else around me who had hair like mine has really affected my confidence

Arofan · 28/10/2020 10:24

Did anyone else watch the afro hair documentary last night? it was really good but I fell asleep. I loved the conversation about the barbers salon and the feeling of being "at home". I totally get what they meant and my ds also went through the phase of wanting his hair parted and 'one-sided floppiness', like his white friends when he was small and just starting to go to birthdays parties.

RedMarauder · 28/10/2020 13:43

@Arofan it is on All 4.

PompomDahlia · 28/10/2020 22:17

@Arofan I watched it! It was interesting. Actually the representation of the black hair salon I've most identified with in pop culture was Irie in White Teeth. She's a mixed race awkward teenager and doesn't understand what was going on and why her relaxer burns so much! Social media and Youtube have been brilliant for learning more about hair

maggiethecat · 29/10/2020 00:15

PompomDahlia - I enjoyed the bits that I caught.

I smile at your MN name as it reminds me of many years ago when my little dd couldn't find me at the supermarket and duly reported to the customer service desk that she had lost me. When asked what her mum looked like she said "she has brown skin, doesn't dress nice and has pom pom hair" 🤣

Should have left her at the shop.

Arofan · 29/10/2020 09:30

@RedMarauder Thanks, I will go and check.

@PompomDahlia I’ve never heard of that programme, Is it available to view? I could tell you stories about my scalp literally being ripped off. One in particular sticks in my mind as I was so traumatised by it I became delirious later on when I went to bed. I woke to find my DM placing cold wet towels on my head as I had been sweating and shouting out nonsense in my sleep, something I’d never done before. My scalp took ages to heal and never done a straight perm since. That was in 1991.

It is so sad to think of the amount of discomfort, time and money spent trying to change afro hair that a lot of women go through. I like it when I see women wearing their natural hair. I wish that I had the pride in my hair now, when I was younger. I had no idea how to care for it, so just permed it for years.

I get what you are saying. This is why it is so important to build up the children's confidence about their hair and the skin they are in. It will carry them through life. I hope you find the courage to wear your hair as you see fit.
