Lovely wooden toy for my toddler from Facebook marketplace. Clicked on the profile of the person I've arranged to buy from. Lots of stuff on his profile re Britain first, anti Muslim, aryan brotherhood etc. Clear racist. My profile doesn't have a photo of me on it. As a black woman, I don't know whether to buy this toy, which is a bargain and something I've been looking for second hand for weeks, or to decide not to go and get him something else. Dilemma... What would you do?

I wouldn't give money to a known racist if I can avoid it. Never.

FairFriday · 07/10/2020 15:24

Sorry but no. What was the toy - maybe someone can help find it elsewhere?

earthtopluto · 07/10/2020 15:25

I hate feeling like this. Can't even buy a bloody toy for my son without coming face to face with a racist

Part of me wants to just go and hold my head up high whilst doing it.

I’d be tempted to pay only with notes I’d wiped my bum on... but no I’d not want to line his pockets.

earthtopluto · 07/10/2020 15:28

They're sensory toys that are like gold dust as they always sell so fast and are about £100 to buy brand new.

earthtopluto · 07/10/2020 15:29

I could pay him the £20 in 20ps?

OP posts:
FairFriday · 07/10/2020 15:32

Is that legal tender?

earthtopluto · 07/10/2020 15:34

Would've thought so!

OP posts:
FairFriday · 07/10/2020 15:35

Oh. I looked. You can pay in 1p coins up to ‘under £20’.

JingsMahBucket · 07/10/2020 15:37

He's selling it for only £20? I'd think something was off with it anyway if it's going that cheap.

I also wouldn't want to meet/confront him to pay because he could easily and racistly change his mind once you arrive and sees you're Black. That would be unnecessary trauma for me.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 07/10/2020 15:40

I get the temptation especially given the toys are heavily discounted.

I couldn't simply because it is the most effective protest I have.

If you are buying in person I hope he still sells to you when he sees you

FairFriday · 07/10/2020 15:41

Can you say what it is and we can have a hunt? Someone may even have a one looking for a good home.

toomanyspiderplants · 07/10/2020 15:47

1p coin is legal tender up to 20p
maggiethecat · 07/10/2020 16:04

Nope. I'd cringe every time dc went near it.

Venicelover · 07/10/2020 16:25

No, I wouldn't buy from someone so openly racist.

Farle29 · 07/10/2020 18:52

Difficult one but I would not want to reward someone with that mindset with my hard earned money. It would remind me ever time I looked at it and leave a bad taste. Keep looking , something else will turn up

ThinSlicePizza · 07/10/2020 19:10

For kids toys on fb thats too heavily discounted. Really good kids toys still sell for half the price. My dds toys when I bought them for 45+ 50 still sold the 20-25, 3 years later.

Alarm bells for me.

JingsMahBucket · 07/10/2020 19:48

@ThinSlicePizza glad it's not just me who thinks the deal smells funny.

Ablackrussian · 07/10/2020 20:06

No, I couldn't.

Phoenix21 · 07/10/2020 20:36

No I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of having my money.

C130 · 08/10/2020 10:04

No I would not. What are the toys you are after. Someone may be able to help you source them elsewhere.

ThinSlicePizza · 08/10/2020 11:55

if you post the name of the toy, we can scour the internet for a cheap one. there will be one somewhere.

RedMarauder · 08/10/2020 18:01

No for two reasons:

  1. You don't buy stuff from openly racist people as you are harming yourself and your own family let alone others by giving money to such people as you are supporting their views.
  2. The toy is normally £100 and he's selling it for £20 then it is dodgy. Remember if it sounds too good to be true then it is.
BameChange123 · 21/10/2020 08:11

Possibly stolen goods or other reason seller doesn't know value? Or (highly unlikely) pseudo selling item that would attract a certain 'type' of buyer. It's a bit like the selling equivalent of showing someone their puppies. IYSWIM.
Another option of you really want it is to get a sympathetic white friend to obtain it on your behalf but I get your concern about dealing with these nasty types, it 's not at all good for your well-being and bad vibes from the item. Hope you can source similar through good people on here instead.
