Anyone with dc there? What’s the real deal with Exeter uni? I’ve heard lots of negatives about it in terms of ethnic diversity and how it can be very lonely. But it ticks all the boxes for the course DD wants to study including environment etc. Our dentist who is black also shared that his DD was there and loves it. We don’t want to miss out on a good university so pls let me hear about your dcs experiences.

I'm feeling really old and doddery today, will sod off now. and take a nap! Wink

Hi OP, I noticed this thread in Active and thought I'd share as I'm from Bristol originally and now live not far from Exeter. I have spent most of my life in various parts of the SW and even as a white person, the lack of diversity in this part of the region is very obvious and embarrassing. There is a saddening, 'small town' mindset in Devon and Cornwall.
I could not recommend Bristol

Arofan · 06/10/2020 15:40

@EchoCardioGran We all have our doddery days Grin. No need to leave the thread unless you really need a nap. You’ve given me a good laugh though with the Emma Thompson post.

@PinkJellycat I appreciate there will be university towns that are very white and wouldn’t just strike off a university because of it. But an overtly hostile environment in or outside the university is quite something else, no matter how good an institution it is. No one wants their dc to be followed down a path with chants of “N* go back to where you come from”, or wake up to Swasticka’s posted all over their halls.

I’m surprised you mentioned Bristol though, I thought the university was quite ethnically diverse? It doesn’t have that negative aura that Exeter has.

Oh I completely apologise for my fat fingers @Arofan - I meant "I could not recommend Bristol more"

It's a wonderful uni and a wonderful city.

York has a lot of overseas students but they are often from China and do not always mix extensively outside their own social groups.
It obviously has other BAME students but is not particularly culturally diverse.

Vice-Chancellor at the University of Exeter, launched the Provost Commission
to recommend and implement new approaches, events, initiatives and policies
to ensure all of its campuses are welcoming, open and diverse places for students, staff and visitors

The wording above actually scares me..what it says is that they have a problem. Fair enough, they are working on improving it.

Compare what Exeter is doing to combact racism to What York University is doing.

Quite an eye-opener wouldn't you say?

York University is in Canada.

University of York is in the UK. ( It is often called York University in the UK just to confuse matters)

Arofan · 07/10/2020 20:01

doh! how did I miss that? I'm having my own doddery moment today.

I read some info on University of York's page yesterday and this evening just quickly googled to find the link and got the wrong one. Here's what I meant to post University of York . In addition, they invited DD to a Zoom meeting to discuss her concerns.

Sometimes it can be personality and how people mingle and get on with others. However I know two sisters, one went to York and thrived. The other went to oxford and didnt like it at all. Almost dropped out because of feeling isolated.
