Acne Scars

Hi there everyone,

Just wondering what others do in relation to acne scars. Are there any products that you could recommend, please?
My scars are black and can last for over a year before they fade. I wash my make up off every night with and oil remover, then a face wash followed by a cleansing water. In the morning I use a face scrub and then cleansing water. Am I doing too much, not enough or simply over-stimulating my skin?
Please help, I'm clueless!

Same problem. Hope someone will be along to help soon. I have hyperpigmentation scars for as long as I can remember. Have tried everything - nothing works. Curious what the solution is

Have you tried a derma roller? It apparently works for acne scars. You will need bio oil to use with it.

@creativecringe thanks for replying. That's not something I've heard of but I shall do some research 😁

I’d advise against a face scrub - from what I’ve heard it can create micro tears in the skin and leave it irritated and open to infection.

This goes against usual advice but I find getting in the sun helps me - my skin tans and the brown marks and scars are less prominent. Also salt water from swimming in the sea helps. I’m currently on oral antibiotics for acne and that’s helping to avoid the big cysts on my back that would create huge keloid scars.

Read up on using acids to exfoliate - you do need to be careful if darker skinned though to avoid hyperpigmentation. Mandelic acid is one of the more gentle ones and I’ve seen it recommended for darker skins, whereas glycolic can be a bit harsher. The Ordinary do affordable versions so you can try them out. There are some good instagrammers with info - brownskinderm

I have had acne scars for years!

Started suing Mandelic acid from The Ordinary range 3 months ago and the difference is massive! Comes in a small bottle and I think its less than £7. I only use it at night

Agree with pompom and bidopharm. Mandelic Acid is the best for Black skin, other face acids types tend to be too harsh, as our skin is sensitive. It really does make a difference to scars and acne

I 've had really bad acne scars since I was a teenager and used loads of things and the one thing that worked for me was a derma roller. The marks are nearly all gone now and I am so thankful. You can get them in several sizes. I researched them on youtube

Nked Face do great skin peels that can be used at home for scarring and also dermaroller kits.

I recommend you look on You Tube at Dr VanIta Rattan From the Hyperpigmentation Clinic. She focuses on women on colour and has many videos on different skin issues including acne and scarring.

She is great, if you subscribe you will be notified when she posts a new video and she is online for a hour from posting the video to answer questions. She also requests you tell her what videos you would like her to make. She also reviews well known skin care brands.

I've heard good things about the the ordinary nicinamide and Zinc..the Dr I mentioned above also recommended it especially for women of colour.

Oil cleanser method did not work for me. You could try Cerave salicylic cleanser which was much better for me.

Stay away from the scrub and watch some of the Dr's videos for advice.

Have a look at the Black skin directory on Instagram they are dermatologist (of colour) led account instagram.com/blackskindirectoryuk?igshid=1pfh1g2ftaodj

Its also important to wear sunscreen everyday especially if you are using acids. Acids make your skin photosensitive which can cause pigmentation/ melasma. Salicylic acid is best for spots and glycolic acid is good for pigmentation. Also a good retinol will help. Its a form of vitamin A which is essentially what roaccutane is (a dermatolgist prescribed acne treatment).
I'm a bit of a skin care junkie 😳🙈 having had acne as a teenager, during my 1st pregnancy and again when I turned 35, so I now have different routines/ products for how my skin is on any particular day.
