Hello, I had my first two at Kings. My third was born at home with Kings midwives. My experience with Kings is that they were fantastic during my labour but the after care was pretty shoddy. As soon as the baby is out they don't really give a hoot about mum, their only concern is the baby. Of course this is how it should be but it can leave you all a bit shell shocked!

After DD1 I stayed in for a couple of days because she needed observing after swallowing meconium. The showers were quite grim (don't forget your flip flops, you wouldn't want to walk bearfoot) and the loo was disgusting. Infact I had to complain because it was unflushed & full (not nice when you consider what all the women are putting down there) and the bin was over flowing. Basically lots of blood and used loo paper - yuk!

When I arrived on the maternity ward after giving birth (2am, epidural so immobile, 49 hour labour so knackered! new baby so all in a daze!) the midwife took one look at me and said "oh my god, how old are you?! 17?!!". I was infact 29 which she could have found out by reading my notes if she was that interested. She then walked off leaving my curtain wide open and I couldn't get out to shut it. She got really mardy when I buzzed her to ask her to shut them. There are lots of other little things but basically if you can avoid or limit your time on the maternity ward so much the better. The labour ward was fantastic, the midwives there were lovely. I definitely got the feeling that they prefer the doctors to keep out of things, having said that those that had to intervene were great too.

Best of luck with it all. Its amazing! All the blocked loos in the world can't take away the joy and euphoria that come with having children.
