hello

I've been scouring the shops and online for the best moses basket. most of them look too flimsy which worries me...but most of the wicker based ones are either really expensive or come without hoods...

do I really need a hood?

are the average ones 'that' flimsy or will it be ok?

any advice would be gratefully received

we had a hood and i took it off and never used it just got in the way

we had just cheap wicker basket with breathe easy mattress and a good sturdy stand there not in them long enough to have any real weight behind them

Agree with bubblagirl-we also had a hoody one and hood was taken off and never used,so don't worry about the hoodjust make sure you have handles(maybe they always have them,do not know)
By the time your baby is too heavy for a wick basket she/he will no longer enjoy being put in it an you'll need something else like playmat or bouncy chair.

Hi. My son was only in his moses basket for 10 weeks as grew too big for it.
You really dont need to spend a fortune. Never used the hood. Can't really see why you would. If basket in draught or in bright light it is small enough to move, surely.
Agree that sturdy stand is a good idea.
Was in Toys R us today and they had one in the sale at a very reasonable price with bedding etc.

We bought a Moses Basket from Argos, and a Rocking Stand from ToysRUs I think. Some love the rocking and some hate it.(We used the hood)

have you thought about a hammock? we got a koala hammock as i'm tall so didn't want to buy anything bulky that would only last a few weeks with a big baby. it folds up flat and small for storage and trips out and i loved it.

I didn't use a Moses basket for any of my 4 (admittedly fairly large) children. They tended to co-sleep (yes, I had the full lecture from the HV about this), and gradually use the cot more at about 2 months. I don't think that they're that essential. If you really want one, try to ask around - you'll probably find someone who'd lend one to you, and you'll only need it for a few weeks.

ReginaFelange · 11/01/2009 15:11

Moses baskets are a waste of money. Totally unnecessary. I would just use the cot straight away

BoffinMum · 11/01/2009 15:14

I have used one in the living room - my cheap one lasted through 5 babies but the handles have just gone now after 20 years. John Lewis do a really nice white waffle one for £29 that will be the replacement. I am not convinced a stand is necessary.

Would try nct sale, friends, car boots or ebay for one as they are not worth the money full price.
