I was just wondering how many are there of us . . .

I am due end of June and love my antenatal thread as there is so much good advice there but thought it may be nice to share a little with others who are new to this whole thing too.

Anyone interested?

hi ladies,

Interesting that some of you are thinking about going freelance. I am technically freelance at the moment, i.e. I work three days a week for one company (as self-employed, so pay my own tax) and then if other work comes along I squeeze it into the other days or occasionally work over the weekend from home. The one thing I feel put out about is not getting a maternity package. I'll get maternity allowance (same as SMP) but I've had to save up for the rest of my monthly expenses, and will only be able to afford 6 months off.

I also don't get paid if I don't work, so going off sick during this pregnancy is not a good option for me.

The good thing is, that as I pay less tax I can still afford to stick to 3 days a week when I return.

If I was a genuine freelancer without my guaranteed 3 days, I'd need to make sure I was much more flexible or that my clients (employers) would be happy for me to work from home some days. I'm not sure how easy that would be with a child...but you don't know until you try I suppose.

Am actually thinking of taking a full-time job if one is offered to me, so I get sick-pay, paid holidays and a guaranteed job when I return from ML.

Anyway - when did you all get your first booking in appointment? I'm still waiting for mine (8+2 today). And is it bad that I'm already doing the hairband thing with my trousers so early on? Have been eating for England the past week, it's the only thing to help the nausea.

NikNakF · 14/02/2008 14:34

Thanks MissChika!

digitalgirl - don't worry I started with the hairband thing towards end of first trimester. Now the bumpband (also topshop one!) is my lifesaver and don't even need hairband to keep trousers up

I'm trying to get flexible work following baby - watch this space!!

Oh nice one TJuice - I was reading somewhere to do them every time you stop at a red light. Obv your message has reminded me to do more now!

Lennsuey · 14/02/2008 15:09

Hi there! I'm a first timer, due at the end of April!
I've got another 3 weeks working then it all stops for a bit and I start my new job of being a mum! Being self employed i'm going straight down the JC to claim my maternity allowance, it's going to be strange not having my own money after working for 13 years!
30 weeks this weekend and counting, don't know how others feel but have found it tough getting big and heavy as i usually keep pretty fit! Been going swimming regularly to try and retain some kind of figure but don't know if it's working! Other than that a fairly easy pregnancy so far, looking forward to having the time to get organised before the big day arrives!

makecakesnotwar · 14/02/2008 21:36

I never remember Pelvic floors.....

TJuice · 15/02/2008 19:59

hey first timers
everyone is jolly quiet . . .

i am having stretchy weird pains up one side, like i am being pulled apart.

aside from that though - its going ok.

i just feel like such a consumer at the moment - if its not food, then its clothes and baby stuff. and clothes for me too! old habits die hard . . .

i did get a barjun (bargain) at topshop yesterday. nice long flat kate moss biker boots reduced to £20.

Hey Tjuice..hey everyone! I've been working my tail off lately and just trying to get the house in order. My DH has been struck with a cold, so we've been spending most of our time with tissues on the couch...still!

I'm 19 weeks now, still not feeling too much movement. Maybe mine is just quiet. Had to go out and buy another pair of mat jeans since at this job I can wear jeans! Love it! Proper round now, but still just look like a fatty I think. Can't stop eating everything around me. It's been milk lately. must need the calcium. I've never missed mexican food like I do now!!!

Hi AnnVan..there are a few of is in here who have had mc and it is nervous time, but hey you are almost at 12 weeks! See if you can get a reassurance scan off your EPAS. Sometimes that helps ease the tension.

ok off to work, need to pack my bag with loads of snacks.

Gracie14 · 18/02/2008 09:31

Morning all,

Sorry I haven't been on for ages, trying to keep my mind occupied with other things that are not pregnancy related (but failing miserably).

Been feeling abit better over the last week or so, don't know whether this is a bad thing or not. I'm 11+6 today and have my dating scan on Friday and I'm so nervous about there being nothing in there or a mmc.

I was sick yesterday (the baby doesn't seem to be a lover of fruit and yogurt for breakfast would rather have a fry up I think ) so hoping that being sick is still a good sign.

Hope you have all had a good weekend

pigleychez · 18/02/2008 09:59

Gracie14- I felt exactly the same at my first scan.

DH thought i was crazy for thinking there might not be anything in there! Think i just needed the proof to make it seem final and real. Its amazing to see your little baby wriggling around inside you.:}

Im now 19 weeks and have my next scan at 22 weeks. Cant wait to see how much its grown!

Hope everyone is good.

Gracie14 · 18/02/2008 11:19

pigleychez - Thats definately good to know. I do feel pregnancy has sent me more mad than usual. Although sometimes there seems to be so many mc or mmc going on on mumsnet its hard to see a good outcome

So pleased to hear things are going well with you, are you going to find out the sex at your next scan?

pigleychez · 18/02/2008 11:29

No
We want the suprise at the birth. However saying that i keep thinking how much easier it would be to know what clothes etc to buy instead of just neuteral but i suppose thats half the fun.
Ill have to be strong at the scan if they ask if we want to know!

My friend didnt find out with hers and said its a perfect excuse to go out and buy pink/blue when the babies born!

I know what you mean about hearing storys.. not long before my scan, someone i knew when for her 12 scan only to find baby had died at 7 weeks. It played on my mind for weeks!
Its natural to worry but just keep positive!

MrsHOP · 18/02/2008 18:10

hi all,

just thought I'd drop in quickly to see how everyone is - hope all good.

I have been bang on the ebay this weekend for maternity gear. Got myself a few really nice dresses - being an 'ample' six footer I am keeping to the dress over jeans/leggings style as much as poss.... Actually I am a bit worried about how big my boobs are going to get -once the milk comes in, I'll look like a transvestive with a boob job!

I have got 3 invites through the post today for super glam launches with cocktails - boo hoo. I hope they have decent 'virgin' cocktails. And canapes for that matter, I'll be chasing them round the room.

Gracie I agree with Pigley - try and keep positive as much as you can and try not to worry too much. Saying that, I worried like anything before the first scan - it is so lovely seeing it for the first time - really hits it home!

Gracie14 · 19/02/2008 09:31

pigleychez - I can't make up my mind whether I want to know or not whether I'm having a boy or a girl, but I suppose I have got a while to go yet before deciding.

MrsHop - I will try and stay positive, some days I am and others definately not but everybody has to go through it I just have to get on with it and stop panicing about evry little thing.

OnACaffieneHigh · 19/02/2008 12:11

Found out this morning that I'm pregnant with my first

Thought I'd hide out here and hope to get some tips

TJuice · 19/02/2008 16:07

welcome cafeine - its so exciting that first day -its wicked!

mrsHop - 6ft - you are going to be magnificent! i am 5.9 and still wearing heels. height helps the fact that i have gained almost a stone already . . (22 weeks) which may be a little bit too much.

anyway, i need some more maternity jeans. tempted to buy some from the US (sevens are nice as are citizens of humanity) but they are spenny, even on ebay. but if you feel good . . . its worth it.

OP posts:
NikNakF · 19/02/2008 18:42

Cafeine, welcome!

TJuice - I'm 5ft3 so the stone I've gained feels awful I got some Next maternity jeans and they are great, slim on leg but plenty of room for bump and behind...

MrsHOP, agree not fair on the cocktail situation. It's really hard in that sort of situation isn't it?

Ok, off to think about my healthy little boy

pigleychez · 19/02/2008 18:55

Im 5'3 and 19 weeks and so far have only gained
3lb's!

Im amazed! I thought id weigh much more as i have been eating plenty and bump is a fair size now.
Oh well it might mean I only gain baby weight and the moment after birth i'll be back to my pregnancy size! If only hey!

Welcome to Cafeine too

makecakesnotwar · 19/02/2008 20:24

TJuice- a stone is fine....I've gained 15lbs, though not weighed myself this week....and left heels behind after I was diagnosed with SPD, so very envious of you, as I'm 5'6" on a good day. My dad said he thought I could eclipse the sun!

mcchesers · 19/02/2008 21:39

I've gained about a stone so far too. Sounds pretty normal. Talk about karma. I was going on to Tjuice about how regular I was la dee da and now I couldn't pass a giant prune muffin. I'm all bloated and fluffy and have some rockin' heartburn.

Just picked up a bunch of mat stuff on freecycle from a very nice lady in west glasgow. I couldn't bare to spend any more money on maternity clothes. I'm so pleased with the things I've been given. She was really nice to, and due in April eek!

We're going to wait for our 22 week scan in March before buying any clothes. I need to know pink or blue so my folks can send things over from the states.

Tried to get into the NCT classes here, but they are all booked. I guess we'll just go to the NHS one. Anyone heard good things about the NHS classes?

MrsHOP · 20/02/2008 09:28

morning morning

mcchesers - get yourself some dried apricots pronto - worked a treat for me, I have no more than 5 a day and it's got me back on track!

Also DH's cousin is a midwife and has just had her first baby, said she actually felt the NHS classes were more informative from her point of view - I have heard NCT is good for after the event though - coffee meets, making local friends etc. so if you become a member you can still get involved in these.

Niknak a boy how lovely!!

was thinking of getting some sevens - made a mistake and bought a pair of black mat skinnies from topshop, don't think they will last me much longer as they are feeling really hot & scratchy on me already! can't wait until I go on mat leave and I can get away with trackie bums and tshirts all day...

makecakesnotwar · 20/02/2008 09:57

I confess I bookedmy NCT at 9 weeks, a little excitedly. But did it mainly for meeting people, and they do have plenty of events locally that I could go to as well....a lady at my yoga class said that she preferred hospital classes as they were much more informative in terms of what happens in labour and post-birth...think I'll do both to be sure.

MrsHOP- couldn't have gotten my size 16 arse in skinnies pre-pregnancy

tallbirduk · 20/02/2008 10:20

I got 2 new pairs of maternity jeans and a t-shirt (all for £65) delivered yesterday from here :

www.funmum.com/

I am pretty restricted where I can buy my clothes from as I am also 6ft so need 33" inside leg troos as a minimum - and they had some! Wooo. I now have 3 pairs (the others were from DP) - but one is just too massive yet, and has no adjusters, so they will have to wait a while.

I have put on, hmm, 19 lbs (22 weeks) I think - which seems like an awful lot compared with some of you, but I know I'm not really fatter, just more pregnant - if you see what I mean?

bitofadramaqueen · 20/02/2008 12:57

Hi everyone, I'm looking at mat clothes too (22 weeks). Finally had to kiss my regular jeans with hairband/bumpband contraption goodbye so am now waiting for jeans and trousers to be delivered. I actually ordered some trousers from jojomananbebe at the beginning of Feb and they STILL haven't arrived. There have been a few cross emails to them!

I'm booked in for NCT classes but will also go to the NHS ones. Is it bad for me to admit the hospital ones will mean a very short work day .

musicgirl · 20/02/2008 14:06

Hi all, can I join your gang?

I'm an aussie living in Scotland and am 4 weeks pregnant, so due at the end of October.

I've just been made redundant so stressing out a little bit about getting another job then having to confess I'm pregnant.
