is 2600g baby at 34 weeks OK?

OK, strange question, I know. I'm in Germany and the language barrier is getting to me at this crucial time. Went to see the doctor who does the baby checks. She measures baby on the scan and says it's 2600g. "Is that good?" I asked. "It's not bad....it's OK." Now at this late stage I'm getting paranoid about the slightest thing. Does anyone have a clue as to whether this is vastly under or overweight?
Also was told my cervix is too short for 34 weeks and if I don't lie down at all possible times, I'm going to have the baby in three weeks!! Hmmmmm, 3 year old toddler and lying down all day = early labour me thinks!

I have no idea...but would assume that it's in the normal range....otherwise they would have done further tests or asked you to come back sooner, or somehting like that...!

Can see your problem with Toddler and finding resting time, lol....remember a lot of these signs can be a bit hit and miss as to their outcome...and anyway, if you reach 37 weeks, then you would be classed as full term anyway, so no problem

Sounds OK to me, it's 5 and three quarter pounds, and average term weight is 7 pounds.

nutcracker · 19/01/2008 22:08

I think it is in the normal range.

Dd2 was born at 34 weeks and was 2210g. Yep she was a skinny little thing for a while but otherwise fine.

sparklygothkat · 19/01/2008 22:09

I had DS2 17 weeks ago at 33+5 weeks and he weighed 2050g (which was 4lb 8oz) so that is a good weight

WezzleWoo · 19/01/2008 22:23

I had DS 20 weeks ago at 35+1 weeks and he was 2330g (5lb 2oz) so sounds like your LO is doing fine

Another thing to consider is, that scans really are not accurate in determining the weight/size of the Baby...sometimes they nget it right...but just a few milimeters can change everything and a Baby could measure completely different...

Thanks everyone. You've all put my mind to rest. Just need to put the body to rest now! DS up from midnight crying last night - monsters in the cupboard again...sigh.

Hey cheechy - glad you are feeling better.

Thought I would post as I am in Germany too and was told at 32 weeks that my cervix was thinning and it would be 2-3 weeks until the birth. Trouble is, they obsess a bit about measuring the cervix out here in Germany and it can thicken as well as thin throughout the pregnancy. I did not take bed rest, but did make sure I sat down a bit more throughout the day (LO is my first but I have a young Alsation so I stay pretty active) and here I am in week 38 wondering why I still have lots of cervix, no engaged head and am probably going to be late now!!!

Another friend was told bed rest for 24 weeks along the same lines and ended up birthing 2 days before her due date, so I really would not worry too much.

They linked her up to a machine to show her how stress is taken off the cervix lying down but sitting down is still a great help, walking is the most stressful thing!

Besides, I think somebody already said week 37 is perfectly safe - considered full term.

Bet you next time you go to the "FrauenArtz" she tells you to take raspberry leaf tea to bring on the birth!!!

3andnomore · 21/01/2008 17:00

I must say, I am actually glad that we moved over to the UK when I was half through my first pg....certainly much less inventions here, etc...!
At the time I didn't know any better of course, and the less invention thing scared me...!
Anyway, hope all is well

thequietone · 22/01/2008 13:49

Cheers Gabster and 3andnomore. Both made me laugh out loud!! I've been trying to sit or lie down as much as possible and have to see FrauenArtz on Thursday to check again (great, more internal examinations...).
Have to have C Section this time after last birth ruined me (!), so I REALLY need to keep this baby in for the next 3 weeks. Especially since DH is going to Russia on a business trip for a week in a couple of weeks! That's no quick plane ride back, is it? Also have noone here to look after DS if something does happen early.
Please keep all fingers crossed for me.

Gabster, all the best for the birth. Thinking of you in Munich!

ds1 at 38.5 weeks with some IUGR was 2.414kg, and we were allowed home and there was no need for SCBU or anything, so it must be fine.

belgo · 23/01/2008 09:41

cheechymunchy - that sounds fine.

Even if you do have the baby in three weeks, that isn't too early - baby's born at 37 weeks should be fine

Having siad that - there is no way of predicting the start of labour, and you could be pregnant for far longer then three weeks!
