I had 2yrs 8 months btn my two boys, and bought a second hand buggy. I used it a bit for long walksand found it handy. Wouldn't buy an expensive one.
Also bought a buggy board but found it too cumbersome.

i have a 22 month gap between my two and double buggy was great at first. gave me confidence to go out with 2 kids. (even found one to fit into a corsa) now we only use it if i know the eldest is going to sit some of the way then want to get up (2 parents + 2 buggies + 1 child who wants to walk = doesn't work). agree don't buy an expensive one as not worth it with extra mouth to feed. buy some new clothes for hand-me-down baby instead!
we now own the full entourage- double buggy, stroller + buggy board and then big travel system with car seat attached)- where do you put them all??????

I would definitely, will make your life so much easier!

pippylongstockings · 02/01/2008 20:44

My DS1 was 23 months old when my DS2 was born. Used a sling and single buggy for first month but then double buggy bought on e.bay - it was about £90 but it was a good one normally £200 mcclaren. Only in the last month or so made the transistion to single buggy and buggy board. (they are now 2.11 & 1 year old)

We live in town and I don't have a car so I needed to know that my DS1 would be safe when we were out and about as he's pretty lively - he still throws an occasional wobble but normally if it's been a long walk.

have the same dilemma here. dd2 due in april, dd1 will be 2.9. she walks but likes her pram and I tend to walk a lot so not sure what to do. thought about buggy board but not sure it will be okay everytime. wouldn't like to spend lots of money this time though so maybe second hand double is a good idea.

PippiCalzelunghe · 02/01/2008 20:58

hei pippylongstocking are we twins???

glaskham · 02/01/2008 21:04

i had 16mths between my two, and ds wasn't old enough to walk fully while out...we got a toddler seat on our pushchair (was a bit more expensive) but baby got a comfy seat which led down, all singing and dancing, and ds got a big boys seat on the front...it did also come with a buggy board but he hated it so only actually used that twice!!

i do recomend the toddler seat!! especially as its so easy to remove if you know they can walk the distance and easy and not too big to keep on or more room to be pushing if they walk but may need it later on!!

beckystaffs · 02/01/2008 21:05

we brought a sit down type "buggy board". where eldest can sit on top step with feet on bottom step, or she can stand on top step and look over the top of the stroller and pretend she's pushing, better than just looking at the back of stroller in my oppinion.

beckystaffs · 02/01/2008 21:06

ps, my youngest born june to last year, though she was due on 06/06/06!!

glaskham · 02/01/2008 21:08

a bit like this

glaskham · 02/01/2008 21:09

or this one looks a bit nicer and newer....

sweetkitty · 02/01/2008 21:10

I had 18 months between my first two so double buggy was essential, only started not to need it when DD1 turned 3. If it's the option of trying to get a toddler to walk beside you nicely, not run off, touch everything in the shop, lie down and refuse to walk etc or have them strapped into a buggy I know what I would prefer. I used to use a wrist strap with DD1 for a while as well.

I will have 2.6 years between DD2 and the next one and told DP before I got pregnant that I was having a P&T's or no baby! Rational is (I know big expense) it can go from a single to a double easily, will also have an extra seat if DD2 gets tired. Also I will have a 4yo to contend with as well don't fancy a 4 yo and a 3yo walking.

glaskham · 02/01/2008 21:10

or i did consider getting a buggypod

PippiCalzelunghe · 02/01/2008 21:19

I thought the buggypod looks the business. anyone has it? what do you think of it?

Nemoandthefishes · 02/01/2008 21:24

depends on your child, how much you walk and how willing they are too walk. Ds was 2.2yrs when dd1 was born and he was a lazy sausage. However I had a single for local walks and a double if we were out all day so he could rest etc. DD1 was 12mths when dd2 was born so obviously needed a double..however now a year on she is a very good walker and will walk happily for miles. I use a double for the school run in the morning as I tend to be rushing, however when we pick ds up from nursery I tend to take the single as we have all the time we want.

suzi2 · 02/01/2008 21:29

I have an 18 month age gap and have never really used a double buggy. DS is a happy walker most of the time, or I sling him or DD and push the other. I never got on with my buggy board either. If I had had a c-section or did a lot of walking, I might have considered using one more.

I have 2 double buggys. The first was a freebie from freecycle (I put a wanted request in) and is a mothercare stroller. The second was a £50 buy from ebay and is a nipper twin (fab buggy!). Glad I didn't spend too much.

Nemoandthefishes · 02/01/2008 21:29

sorry just to add we have a sit down buggy board aswell which is good but be aware you will end up wiht bashed shins if the toddler faces you as dd1 has a tendancy to kick her legs out etc.

Bensonbluebird · 02/01/2008 21:29

I have 2.4 mo between my 2 and don't have a double buggy - got a buggy board and use it a lot. DS1 has only been in the buggy once in the 7 months since DS2 was born (when he was too ill to walk and we had to get to the doctors). Once DS2 was born DS1 decided that the buggy belonged to the baby. I have a friend with exactly the same gap and they use a double buggy all the time, but her DS1 has no sense of danger and is a nightmare if he is loose.I guess it depends a lot on how good a walker your first child is.

sweetkitty · 02/01/2008 21:33

I liked the look of the buggy pod but what about rain? We have quite a bit of it up here. Also weight distribution and steering. I was thinking if you have a heavy toddler in the buggy pod (doesn't look that sturdy TBH) would it be difficult to steer and get up kerbs etc.

I had a Twin Aria for the DDs and it was a nightmare, wheels were far too small and it was really difficult at even low kerbs.

hellobellosback · 14/01/2008 15:13

We used a big pram for a bit which could fit 3 children in at a push. Now dd#1 is 3.5 and dd#2 is 1.5, LO goes in backpack if she's too slow and her big sister walks. Front packs and backpacks are brilliant!

michtenstein · 15/01/2008 12:45

I had a 2 yr gap and I got a phil and ted. My dd1 only recently (at 4 [hmmm]) stopped using it when I did and we started taing her bike when we went for a walk, she still wont walk far.

LOVEMYMUM · 16/01/2008 08:08

My friend has two LO's under 3 years old and no double buggy. Have nearly had a massive argument with her cos she needs me to babysit one of them if she needs to take the other one anywhere. (She is reluctant to buy dble buggy). Have told her she can't rely on me to be available.

The thing is: how will you be able to go anywhere or do anything without a double buggy? I'm not looking forward to having to manouvere a double buggy when i have two children but i don't know what the alternative is.

eandh · 16/01/2008 08:33

I had one (borrowed from a friend) dd1 was 2.4 when dd2 arrived, she probably went in about 6 times overall. Like your ds dd1 was/is very inquistive and prone to running off, but we got a buggy board for the single pram and she was quite happy on that (or the threat that I'd put her back in reins worked quite well) on the whole she was actually better when dd2 arrived as she liked to h'help' push pushchair.

I had planned section and did find pushing the double buggy quite hard for 1st couple of weeks (had mclarn side by side so dd1 was alot heavier than dd2 so made it uneven)
