Scan worry - any positive stories?

My sister-in law is 23 weeks pregnant and had her second scan yesterday. She was told that the baby's kidneys were inflamed and that this increases her risk of having a baby with Downs Syndrome. Has of course worried her completely and just wondered if this has happened to anyone. What are the next steps? Any positive stories would be appreciated so I can pass them on to her

Can't read and not post as I am going through similar myself. have come back as high risk for downs in the blood test and waiting amnio results.

What has she been told by the sonographer? She needs to get onto it pronto. When i went for ht eamnio the other day I was told that I could leave the amnio till the 20 week scan and still have an amnio if that showed up any abnormalities but I also know that if she didn't want to carry on with the pg she only has until 24 weeks. my amnio was done on Tuesday and I won't get the results till Monday. I'm only 18 weeks so have time on my side. (but I think I'm going ahead whatever the result)

Her sonographer sounded a bit inexperienced actually. Told her to come back at 32 weeks! Then when my s-i-l questioned her she is getting re-scanned next week. Do you go straight to amnio at this stage or is the nuchal scan an option?

I'm not too sure> I wasn't offered a nuchal as it's generally done at about 13 weeks. The amnio is the only conclusive test for downs. Would she be thinking of a termination if it is a downs baby or would she carry on. That is a consideration for her at this point as she only has a week to play with. If I were her on Monday- first thing- I'd ring my midwife. She really hasn't got the time to mess around

Spoke to her today and I think she will go ahead with the pregnancy whatever happens. Good luck with the amnio - I hope it puts your mind at rest. Thanks

this has happened to a former poster on here (fastasleep) with both her babies. she refused the amnio both times. baby number 1 had an enlarged kidney, so she had to have regular scans in case they needed to deliver the baby urgently because of that (she got to about 37/38 weeks, and had various checkups/kidney scans after the birth, and preventative antibiotics for a while, but is a perfectly happy healthy chappy now. baby number 2 was on the high side of normal for kidney measurements, the first scan after the birth showed that the kidneys were fine, so nothing further needed doing.

I've just had the same thing picked up on my 20 week scan and have done a lot of research into it. It's apparently very common (comes up on about 1 in 50 scans), and is usually nothing to worry about. They just keep track of it and put the baby on antibiotics if the problem is still there at birth, although it usually sorts itself out by that point. I was most worried about the DS link, but if dilated kidneys are the only problem spotted on the scan then it's a very poor marker - in fact one study of 320 pregnant women with this problem found that not a single one had a DS baby! Medical staff often don't mention the DS link because the link is so weak (some dispute it exists at all).

Sorry if this is a bit late, but I spent a week in a flap when I first found out about this and wanted to pass on the reassuring info that I eventually found!
