Ecigs and pregnancy

Has anyone ever used an ecig while pregnant, I know it's bad but I'm finding it hard to stop, I've got from 20 to about 5 but just can't seem to quit them altogether, x

Hazandduck · 01/04/2017 16:10

I think e-cigs haven't had enough research to say whether they are safe or not for personal use, let alone when pregnant. Have you spoken to your GP about your struggles? Maybe hypnotherapy would help? Just a thought. I quit in 2012 and still dream about smoking now, I understand how hard it is to give up. Good luck x the NHS Quit Smoking app really helped motivate me x

ew1990 · 01/04/2017 16:19

I've got my first midwife appointment on Monday, I'm only 8 week so I'm gunna speak to her and see what help I can get, I just feel so shitty and guilty when I do have a fag I just struggle, will get the no smoking app xxx

OP posts:
Hazandduck · 01/04/2017 16:41

Oh bless you. I am 8 weeks today too! So nervous as I've had 2 miscarriages and we are trying for our first.
Look you've got an addiction, there is no shame in admitting you're struggling with it. Nicotine is a b!tch to quit!
I've not booked my midwife apt yet, I kind of don't want to admit it's happening! Xx

ew1990 · 01/04/2017 16:43

Well I went docs when I found out and they booked it for me, had pain but had early scan at 6 weeks and saw a little blob with a heartbeat but still can't help but worry, we've been trying for 2 years was beginning to think it would never happen, xx can't wait for 12 weeks though and can start telling people, xxx

OP posts:
ew1990 · 01/04/2017 16:44

Pain is coz of cyst on ovary but they said don't worry they will keep and eye on it and it won't cause any problems xxx

OP posts:
Hazandduck · 01/04/2017 16:46

Ah congratulations, that is lovely that you've got to see the little bean already. I keep pushing for a private scan but my OH really doesn't want to. I think he is worried it will all go wrong before the 12 week scan. I think we will keep ours quiet any way after the scan, just because we told people last time and it's just so sad when things go wrong. Keep it our (and Mumsnet's!) little secret as long as possible! X

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2017 16:47

There isn't enough evidence yet. But did you used to smoke tobacco and now don't?

ew1990 · 01/04/2017 17:06

@StealthPolarBear no I'm still on tobacco, gone from 20 a day to 5, I no anythings better then smoking but just wanted to know if other people have had ecigs, @Hazandduck I know that's why I like Mumsnet, can chat to people when your not telling anyone xxx

OP posts:
FormerlyFrikadela01 · 01/04/2017 17:13

Congratulations. Well done on cutting down to 5 a day. I know the pain. I haven't smoked in years but craved a cigarette like you wouldn't believe when i was pregnant.

Be honest with the midwife. Youll probably do a carbon monoxide test so there's no hiding it anyway. You may well be referred to a specialist stop smoking midwife who will offer support to quit.

Can't comment on ecigs because i know nothing about them.

ew1990 · 01/04/2017 17:15

I went and bought patches but they are doing nothing for me at all! I'll get there I just keep thinking off this little thing inside me, it's not so bad when I'm at work it's when I'm at home and can have one when I want xxx

OP posts:
Hazandduck · 01/04/2017 17:40

That is amazing that you've cut down so much already. That's how I did it in the end, weaning myself off, cut down from 20 to 15 to 7ish then 4 or 5 then 2...over the course of a year and half pretty much. And then I just kept stalling having a cigarette and told myself I'll have one in a minute, I'll have one soon...5 years on and it's worked for me. I just have to trick my brain! Everyone is different though and hopefully your midwife will arrange the right treatment for you. You've already done really well cutting down so much x

ew1990 · 01/04/2017 17:57

Thank you, I'm at work and now is when I would normally go for a cig but I've just popped a nicotine gum in my mouth, xx

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2017 19:32

Ah ok. Well done for cutting down x

PencilsInSpace · 02/04/2017 09:18

Congratulations ew1990 Flowers

Smoke Free Action have produced guidance for midwives and pregnant women on the use of ecigs in pregnancy. They say:

  • The safest products to use are nicotine replacements such as patches and gum
  • If you find an e-cigarette helpful, it is far safer than continuing to smoke
  • E-cigarettes aren’t risk free, but they are much less harmful than smoking
  • If using an e-cigarette helps you stay smokefree, it is much safer for you and your baby than smoking
  • You can use your e-cigarette as often as you need to stay smokefree

Another thing you can do is double up on NRT - use a patch but also a faster acting type like gum or spray when you are finding it tough. What strength are you using? If there's a higher strength don't be afraid to use it, the important thing is to stay off the fags.

Funnyonion17 · 02/04/2017 09:21

I quit vaping cold turkey about 28 weeks ago for pregnancy. I read a study about nicotine and its effects on an unborn fetus. Scared the shit out of me! The test was carried out on unborn rats but they suspect nicotine in babies can cause defects. So i thought fine, i will go ahead with the zero nicotine stuff. But even certain individual ingredients in those are very dangerous.

PencilsInSpace · 02/04/2017 09:46

Licenced nicotine products are safe to use in pregnancy and are widely prescribed to pregnant women.

But even certain individual ingredients in those are very dangerous.

Which ingredients are you talking about and where did you get this information?

I'm very pleased for any woman who has managed to quit cold turkey because of pregnancy, or for any other reason. For those who cannot manage this, the effect of scaremongering about nicotine, or about ecigs, is it makes it far less likely they will be able to quit.

More info here from NHS.

Funnyonion17 · 02/04/2017 13:19

Who's scare mongering? Just because I've made a different choice doesn't mean I'm judging or scare mongering. It is true. Do the research and you will see, nicotine replacement is not considered safe at all, it's a stimulant and as such can impact the unborn baby and the pregnancy. Whilst I'm sure it's a hell of a lot safer then smoking and a much better choice there are still risks and it was never once sold to me as risk free and to try silence those who acknowledge the risks is rediculous. I'm simply sharing my finding from speaking to specialists and research. See attached pic, straight from the NHS website and although only a study, it's not a risk I'm prepared to take. The op asked about using an ecig during pregnancy too, not approved cessation methods. Which although approved, still have risks. A quick Google will produce plenty of info about the links with nicotine and ADHD, heart issues and so much more. Yea studies are on rats and i can appreciate on humans nicotine may not have such a drastic consequence. But as i said it was a risk i wasn't willing to take. So please don't come on here trying to silence me for providing information, i wouldn't judge or tell another pregnant lady not to use smoking cessation or to shut up recommending it, but i think it's important to always be aware of the risks when making choices.

PencilsInSpace · 02/04/2017 15:09

Who's scare mongering?
You are.

nicotine replacement is not considered safe at all
Bullshit. This is from ASH:

As stopping smoking can be difficult, some women may need pharmacotherapy support. A review of the efficacy and safety of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in pregnancy found that NRT increased smoking cessation rates, measured in late pregnancy, by approximately 40%. The authors found no evidence that NRT used for smoking cessation in pregnancy has either positive or negative impacts on birth outcomes.

A US review of studies found that NRT use significantly decreased the risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight compared to that of smokers and also found that NRT use does not appear to increase the risk of malformations.

---
it was never once sold to me as risk free
Good, because nothing is 'risk free'. Nothing at all.

I'm simply sharing my finding from speaking to specialists and research.
Fascinating. Which specialists did you speak to? What other research have you done beyond the NHS choices analysis of a story from 2011 in the daily mail? You could at least be honest enough to link to the page so people can read the full nuanced discussion for themselves.

it's not a risk I'm prepared to take
And that's fine. You managed to quit cold turkey and as I said above, I'm very pleased for you. The OP is not in your position though, she is struggling to quit altogether. Coming onto her thread and telling her that they suspect nicotine in babies can cause defects is scaremongering.

The op asked about using an ecig during pregnancy too, not approved cessation methods.
Approved cessation methods are only safer if they work. OP is already using NRT & is still struggling to stop smoking completely. Ecigs work for a lot of people who have failed to quit using NRT. The NHS provides guidance on the use of ecigs in pregnancy:

E-cigarettes allow you to inhale nicotine through a vapour rather than smoke. Cigarettes deliver nicotine along with thousands of harmful chemicals. By itself, nicotine is relatively harmless.

E-cigarettes do not produce tar and carbon monoxide, two of the main toxins in cigarette smoke. Carbon monoxide is particularly harmful to developing babies. The vapour from an e-cigarette does contain some of the potentially harmful chemicals found in cigarette smoke, but at much lower levels.

E-cigarettes are fairly new and there are still some things we don't know. However, current evidence on e-cigarettes indicates they are much less risky than smoking.

If using an e-cigarette helps you to stop smoking, it is much safer for you and your baby than continuing to smoke.

Unlike NRT, such as patches and gum, e-cigarettes are not available on NHS prescription. If you want to use an e-cigarette, you can still get free expert help from a stop smoking adviser.

----
So please don't come on here trying to silence me
Don't be ridiculous Grin How am I 'silencing' you? How does that even work on a forum? You just write what you want in the box then hit 'post'. I can't stop you!

All I have done is point out the effects of scaremongering which, in this situation, vastly outweigh the tiny theoretical risks of nicotine.

PencilsInSpace · 02/04/2017 19:24

ew1990 I want to say sorry for my part in the escalating argument on your thread BlushFlowers

Good luck for your MW appointment tomorrow. Be honest with her and grab all the support you can. She won't be judgmental, they are very used to pregnant smokers feeling guilty and finding it hard to say they smoke, hence offering everybody a CO test.

Good luck and congratulations to you too, Hazandduck Flowers

ew1990 · 02/04/2017 21:18

@PencilsInSpace ahh don't be daft it all just goes over my head, I'm sure once I get to my 12 week scan and it all seems real something will click that will make me quit, I will be honest with the midwife I'm not afraid to ask for help, really gunna try and not have one tomorrow, I wake up at 5:30 for work and my appointment is at 2 so if I can go that long and then a little longer it won't be so bad, just take it one craving at a time is all I can, when I want one I just put my hand on my stomach and I don't anymore, sometimes nothing works, I have a really stressful job and I know it's not an excuse but that doesn't help, sometimes just need 5 minutes to get my head together and not have a breakdown xxx

OP posts:
Hazandduck · 02/04/2017 23:57

That's a good approach! The cravings themselves they say only last for a minute, so distracting yourself in that minute can work wonders, I would gulp down a glass of water whenever the urge got too much, it just gave me something to do and kind of filled me up. You can do this! :)

Thank you pencilsinspace it doesn't feel real yet 😬 X

MrsB12345 · 03/04/2017 18:41

@PencilsInSpace I've just got to say - awesome response there. I was just waiting to the mic drop at the end. #legendary

PencilsInSpace · 04/04/2017 20:15

GrinBlush

How did you get on with the MW, ew1990?

ew1990 · 04/04/2017 20:25

Thanks for asking, it went well, when I told her I'm having trouble smoking the first thing she said is have you tried an ecig if patches aren't working? I went and bought one today, she said although there isn't evidence that they are 100% safe there's no tar or carbon monoxide in them, so far I haven't had a cig since about 1pm x

OP posts:
MrsB12345 · 04/04/2017 20:28

That's great news @ew1990. I quit last summer and used a ecig. The different flavours are amazing. Good luck xx
