Why so many second hand Bugaboos?

Morning MN

I'm currently on the market for a pram (carrycot + seat) for new baby coming in July. Just looking not buying for now, and amazed at how freakishly expensive everything is!
So not dismissing buying very good condition second hand, and looking on sites like gumtree, I'm finding a LOT of Bugaboos, and very few Mamas and Papas, or Silver Cross for instance. These are not the only brands I'm looking at, just examples, but given the price of a new Bugaboo, I wonder are so many people selling them after a year!? Do they not age well?

If you own one, or did in the past, or are considering buying one, what are your thoughts? Thanks!

I've got a bugaboo and had it since DS was born and still use It for my DS who is 2, as they are sturdy and last so I will use it again if we have baby number 2, it still looks new. However I hardly ever use a car and walk to nearly every thing shops/parks/beach so it's been great, could imagine it getting a bit annoying if you are in and out of a car all the time.

Bugaboos seem to hold their value... So it might be that the ones you're seeing are third or fourth hand as well as all the second hand ones.

I bought mine second hand, used it for two dc and then sold it for £25 more than I bought it for Grin

We have a Mamas & Papas Armadillo Flip - it was very reasonable compared to the bugaboos, think we paid £200 (although we got a carry cot second hand as it was stupidly expensive for the amount of time you need it). It ticked my boxes of being easy to fold, fits in the boot of our medium size car, can be front or parent facing and is ok on the bus. However the wheels are definitely not off road and it's not all that robust - it definitely feels more lightweight than the uppababies and bugaboos that the rest of my NCT group have and I'm not sure how well it will last. If you're looking at off road you would definitely need the XT version as a minimum.

There are lots of bugaboos, they were expensive to buy and hold their value so are worth selling on and they last. I had a Cameron for dc3 (second hand) and sold it for as much as I bought if for 2 years later. It was fab to push and I wished I had known about them sooner. Not good at all for public transport though.
I would be careful you don't try to get one travel system to do too many jobs though. Realistically a good pram for the bus is pretty much the opposite to a good off-road pram. If you are going to do both maybe two second hands ones would work better. Or a sling for off road walks might be easier.

I LOVE my bugaboo! I have had it nearly seven years, used it for two kids in a row and it's still going strong and looking good! I will be selling it fairly soon as youngest is nearly outgrown it and no more babies!

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 30/01/2017 14:56

Also, as I don't drive I ONLY use public transport and have never had a problem with the Cameleon!

Hopelass · 30/01/2017 15:02

Bugaboo hold their value well and sell for a reasonable price second hand whereas some other brands people may not think it's worth selling them on for say less than £100 and will donate to charity or pass on to family/friends. I'm have a second hand cameleon and have had no problems. Also I think the above is true that once you don't need a travel system you get rid of the big pram and get a one step fold stroller or the like.

Thank you all for your advice, lots of food for thought for sure!!

If you're still looking, we've decided on Uppababy Cruz - it's so agile, folds in one movement (shockingly, the Bugaboos I tried weren't as easy, contrary to my expectations), good quality and looks like it will last a while. Check it out ;)

I had a bugaboo and used it for both of my children. I loved it when they were babies and then like most people got a stroller when they were older. Mine lasted really well and still looks in good condition.

Another Babyjogger fan here. We had a pre-loved city mini for DS1 and used it every day until he was over 4yo. Have treated ourselves to a brand new 2012 model city mini on eBay for DS2 for £120 and love it.

They are light, the fold up thing is amazing and all the fittings and straps and bits are good quality. Can't go wrong!

It's tricky trying to find a pram that does it all! I work in the industry, and still don't know what to get. As someone else has said, maybe 2 prams is an idea? Maybe get your Bugaboo for rougher terrain, but if you're doing public transport, get a 2nd hand Babyzen yoyo (great for holidays too then!)

I want something that can do a bit rougher terrain, and drive everywhere so don't need to worry about public transport. I think we're decided on the Britax smile. It's discontinued now, but you can still get hold of it (it's basically the uppababy vista but half the price). I absolutely love the Affinity 2 by Britax, but it's not really all terrain.

Also, check out the new Mothercare Journey - that is very impressive! And just £299 or something, including your car seat! If we don't get the smile, we will probably go for that. From what I've seen, it would fare well both on rougher terrain and public transport.

Silver Cross is gorgeous quality ❤️

Quick update - ended up going for a second hand Bugaboo Cameleon 3 in great condition for a fraction of the price! At this price we won't feel bad if we buy another one in 6 months for travelling Grin
