Hi
I would love to get some honest reactions to the name Merlin ...
I'm not British or living in the UK right now, but my boyfriend's British. We'd like to find a name that works well in English and Dutch. My boyfriend loves Merlin, but I 'm not sure how strange it sounds to British ears ...
Please let me know what you all think.
Thanks!

I've only ever known one Merlin, and he was the son of a nomadic new-age wiccan (wore all the crushed velvet she could lay her hands on)... I'm afraid that about sums it up for me.

My ds has a friend called Merlin and I think it suits him well. He does tend to get called other names quite a lot though, Marlon/Marlan/Marlin, more often than most kids.

BlueBeetle · 07/09/2006 22:37

Definitely a bit new age - but lovely ! I probably wouldn't be allowed to use it as Dh extemely square - but I like it a lot !

My half French, half English nephew is named Merlin. It works well in both languages, and really suits him. I think it's a lovely name.

depends if you guys can carry it off too--- would suit a new age/ slightly hippy /alternative family ..... i think it is lovely, but then ...do you want to spend the next 18 years watching a lot of people smirk when you introduce your child.....

beansprout · 01/10/2006 12:56

Not great, have to say. And I am also reminded of the popular 1970s electronic game

soaringflyingCOD · 01/10/2006 12:57

id think
"what a tosser"

SpaceCadet · 01/10/2006 12:57

theres a boy is ds's class called merlin..poor kid.

SpaceCadet · 01/10/2006 12:59

forget to say that his mum is as new age as you can get...i like to think of myself as pretty bohemian and used to be a full on new ager, but my kids have very boring names in comparism

SoupDragon · 01/10/2006 13:02

I quite like it actually. It's not really any odder than some of the other names out there right now TBH. Will he have a dutch surname? Merlin Foreignsurname works better than Merlin Smith.

pizzaexpress · 01/10/2006 14:12

I know someone who called thier son Merlin Keanu Harison Happy + surname - Dont do it !!!!

SoMuchToBits · 01/10/2006 14:12

I think its OK. There was a politician a while ago called Merlin Rees, wasn't there? I don't remember him being particularly "new agey".

colditz · 01/10/2006 14:38

No. no no no no no.

Reminds me of a cartoon.

But i am very very square when it comes to children's names - my sons sound like they have been named after 50 year old accountants.

saadia · 01/10/2006 14:39

Doesn't sound right to me, like a joke name really.

DumbledoresGirl · 01/10/2006 15:00

Love the name Merlin.

Not sure even I would be brave enough to name a child that though.
