Hi,

I've had lower abdominal pains - feels like i've done too many leg exercise at the gym and pulled a muscle, as well as sharp apins. I've put it down to my muscles strectching as I grow (26 weeks now) but other people I know have had it and they've had to go to hospital to be monitored. I'm not too distressed about mine as it's not unbearable and no other symptoms but has anyone else had the same ?? any words of advice ??

I've had similar with both my previous pregnancies - I was told it was the muscles and the tendons and all the other bits down there stretching and loosening ready for the big day. It can be very uncomfortable and the pains can get quite sharp too. It was always worse when I had exerted myself physically. My midwife didn't see any need to check me out further. If it gets much worse or more intense then I'd call your midwife just to check.

I've been experiencing this at just over 15 weeks. It's my first pregnancy and I have very taut abdominal muscles, being a runner, which apparently makes it worse. All weekend my belly button and the area immediately around and below it felt very tender - even hurt to press - with occasional sharp pains. Interestingly I found that it improved when I went for a run. Standing for a long time tended to cause discomfort as did bending over against the constraint of clothing waistbands.

It's fine again now but will probably happen many more times as I get bigger. I've been told by others that as long as the pain doesn't last for long periods of time or start to resemble period-like cramps, then there's nothing to worry about. It's called round ligament pain and is very common.
