To lie or not to lie - SMP

So I got a very faint line this morning very excited. This will be our second child.

I reckon I miss the increased SMP by about a week. So what happens if I lie about my dates by a week or so to get an extra 3 months SMP.

Will they(the midvifes etc) be able to tell or is there enough general margin in these things what with different cycle lengths anyway. i'm a 28 dayer myself.

I know its wrong to lie but it would increase my time off by 3 months and its not by much.

It might be slightly problematic if I try and go for a home birth which I started last time but went for an epidural in the end(which was fabulous)

What do you think?

Wait and see what your scan says, my dates always altered after the scan.

Not sure about the logistics of kying over your dates...

Gillian76 · 23/07/2006 10:37

lying over your dates of course!

misdee · 23/07/2006 10:38

wait and see is MHO. u dont have to tell emplyer you are pregnant for ages yet.

Eulalia · 23/07/2006 10:38

Basically you'd always be one week more pregant than what you are telling everyone which would be OK from the point of safety of the baby. If it came to the due date and the baby had to be induced you might have to push for the induction date to be moved forward so that the baby wasn't too late.

What would happen if the baby came early though - would this affect your SMP?

DollyP · 23/07/2006 21:08

Sorry to be thick but what are the changes to the SMP? Is it an extra 12 weeks at £102/ week? I am now 5 weeks pg so looks like i have missed it.....

Gillian76 · 23/07/2006 21:20

There is a site that tells you all about it. Will have a look...

Gillian76 · 23/07/2006 21:22

Try here

1Baby1Bump · 23/07/2006 21:27

its 108 pounds per week now! oooohhhhh......!

aragon · 23/07/2006 21:29

Lie away - the scan is what they'll go by if there's a big difference - and you might be in time. I used to be a midwife and if you said to me "I'm 8 weeks" there's no way I could tell without the aid of a scan that you were 9.

Toothache · 23/07/2006 21:40

Sallymac - My midwives winked and put a due date 5 days earlier than they had worked out when I told them I had started a new job and wouldn't be entitled to SMP. They generally want the best for YOU nevermind the 'system'. So I'm sure if you explained they would be more than happy to..... ahem.... accommodate you.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

5 days LATER!

DontlookatmeImshy · 23/07/2006 22:08

My actual due date was 5 days later than the scan date. There was no way the scan date was correct (physical impossibility lol) but when it came to filling out the MATB1 form I told them to go with the (earlier) scan date as our company was having a massive round of redundancies and I was in danger of not qualifying for SMP by not still being employed in the 15th week before EWC. As it happened I was made redundant in the 15th week before EWC based on the scan dates and so got SMP. If i'd gone for my real due date I'd have missed out.

You just need to be careful if there are problems at the end of the pregnancy. I had to book a c/s for 38 weeks due to placenta previa and then had to work quite hard on the consultant to accept the later due date as the real one.

MaryBS · 13/08/2006 04:21

If the baby is born early, it doesn't affect the amount of SMP you get, although if you hadn't started your maternity by the time the baby is born, you'd have to start it straight away.
