Hi all, woah, we are surrounded by teachers Grin

Had my private scan, got to see a healthy wee baby and the wee heartbeat! So yay! I feel like I am allowed to be excited now Smile And obviously my mum feels the same as she came home and bought a pram Grin

Hope everyone's having a nice weekend!

Abimci · 04/01/2014 19:55

I'm not sure in what way we get a good deal with maternity or childcare Confused I get less maternity pay than everyone I know and work longer hours so will have to pay a lot for childcare. We are better off in the holidays as we'll be able to look after our own kids (whilst doing a load of planning and other stuff for following term!) other than that I can't see in what way we get it easy?

Howly are you due on 26/7 August? If so your leave starts the day the baby is born so you'll still get the hols Smile

travispickles · 04/01/2014 20:07

I am due 11/8 but will be getting an ELCS so will probably only go to 38 weeks- will be around 1st I think. Which means I lose 4 of my 6 weeks maternity pay Hmm but as I said at least we will save a year of child care costs. Unbelievable how much full time nursery comes to Shock

NameToBeDecided · 04/01/2014 20:07

Umm. Am I still allowed on here? I need to confess I'm not a teacher and don't have plans to be one. I'm sorry, I'll go pack my bags now!! Grin
still feeling sick in the evenings but it was about this stage I lost the last one (mmc found at 12 weeks) so feeling hopeful that it's a good sign. Seen a heartbeat at 5 weeks and got another scan on Wednesday so fx it's all still ok.

HungryHorace · 04/01/2014 20:10

Yay, misery. :-)

Did you get a choice with the pram?!?!

I only get SMP and also have to work all the hours god sends, so I feel quite hard done by. But never mind, having a baby was my choice, as was having a second with the same terms!

Though while I've been off they've taken something away from us meaning I've lost £5k a year earnings. Ouchy. And they wonder why I'm not keen on going back!

HalfPintPickle · 04/01/2014 20:23

Who do I need to PM for the FB group? Just remembered!

Misery perfect news!!

Finn I had my dd during my fourth year of my bed. I did all my essays etc whilst pregnant and then went back and did my placement when she was just under a year. Then was all done! Good luck with it all Grin

WeeJo08 · 04/01/2014 20:28

My Mum was a teacher, then a headteacher, for many years in special education. When she saw my choices in study at A Level & uni (languages) she panicked that I wanted to be a teacher! Shock I can honestly say it wasn't in my plan anyway, but after a year's teaching when I had my year in industry abroad + language tutoring GCSE students I knew I was definitely not cut out to be a teacher! My Mum was very relieved! I think teaching is one of the hardest jobs out there, so emotionally (and physically) draining. I'm a translator & interpreter.

FriendofDorothy · 04/01/2014 20:30

Maybe it's just over here that teachers seem to get a way better deal than most!

My friend had a baby in August, went on mat leave at the end of the summer term and doesn't have to return until the following September.

Most people on the island (Guernsey) get 6 weeks maternity leave and then have to go back to work.

FriendofDorothy · 04/01/2014 20:32

Oh, and my Mum was a teacher so I know how bloody hard she worked. She always maintained though that it balanced out, long hours during term time and long holidays.

Howly · 04/01/2014 20:36

No I'm due 26 July so just straddling July and August threads as I could go over!

Swings and roundabouts with all jobs! I love teaching but the workload is unrealistic and I don't know if I will stay in the profession after my baby s born, might move to something less stressful! School work takes over my life and I know I will struggle mentally to be a excellent teacher and mother next year!

mammabear4 · 04/01/2014 20:49

Hey everyone - I'm a teacher too! Dreading Monday and getting back into the swing of things, I'm just completely shattered!

I read that after 8 weeks if a heartbeat is seen (which we did!) that the chances of continuing the pregnancy to full term increases to 98%, so that has very much put my mind at rest :)

I have a question for the multitude of teachers on this thread - I'm a primary school teacher in my NQT year... I'm almost nervous to tell my head that I'm pregnant because I'm only on a one year fixed term contract... From what I've researched it seems I'll still get full maternity pay but surely I won't get it if she decides she doesn't want me back after my maternity leave??

sillymeagain · 04/01/2014 20:49

Travis....is there a reason that your elcs is at 38 weeks or is that standard now. This is my 4th and all others were at 39 weeks. I vaguely remember them saying any subsequent cs' s would be earlier but that was 6 years ago and not sure how things have changed?

miserywaterfall · 04/01/2014 20:59

Yeah, I had a choice in the pram, it was a total bargain price as well, so even more awesome! My parents are brilliant and couldn't be happier. DH told his mother tonight and within 2 minutes she was talking about her cats again like he hadn't told her anything at all Hmm No hope for some people!

Mamma what you said there about the heartbeat thing has made me feel great too Grin Saw my tiny baby heartbeat earlier and the girl dated me 8weeks rather than the 9 I thought, so yay!

travispickles · 04/01/2014 21:32

No silly only that I spoke to my friend earlier who had hers at the local hospital and she had pushed hers to 38+1 so the impression I got was that they do then earlier here

HungryHorace · 04/01/2014 21:32

Half pint, you can PM me if you like :-)

Mitchell81 · 04/01/2014 22:03

Sillymeagain- I've had 4 c sections and all have been at 39 weeks. They don't like to do it earlier unless they have to, well at my hospital anyway.

HalfPintPickle · 04/01/2014 22:08

I had my section at 38 weeks with DD 3 years ago.

Feeling - thank you, it's nice to know I'm not the only one attempting both babies and degrees :)

HalfPintPickle · 04/01/2014 22:23

Thanks for the group add :)

I'm quite lucky with my mat leave I think, the NHS is pretty generous and I can take annual leave before it starts etc and can bump up pay by doing overtime now and feb!!!
I'm also doing a degree Grin specialist Tissue Viability which I'm halfway through... I was going to carry on my next module in October when I would have a two month old baby but now it's going to be two two month old babies I'm not sure that is such a brilliant idea!!Blush

dontsqueezetheteabag · 04/01/2014 22:36

Hi all!

I'm due 7th August. Il be 10 weeks on Thursday.

I have my booking in appointment on Monday. Anyone know roughly what happens at that? Do I need to take DH?

TIA

HungryHorace · 04/01/2014 22:38

I'm hoping for a 38 week section this time. I really don't want to go into labour!

I'll just have to see what the consultant says, I suppose. :-)

Ruggle · 04/01/2014 22:40

I'm not a teacher, but I coincidentally work at a PGCE college. My oh is a teacher...which will be handy as he'll obviously be on summer leave for the birth, assuming bub comes on time!

HungryHorace · 04/01/2014 22:40

Don't take your DH, he will be bored rigid, Dontsqueeze!

Do take a wee sample. :-)

After this you'll have your scan and you'll be given the schedule for midwife visits so you'll know when to book in.
