Ketones in wee and mixed messages from GPs.

Hi, I dropped a urine sample into the surgery this morning to test for ketones. I am 9 wks pregnant and having a rough time with morning sickness.

A week ago the same test came back neg, but the GP I saw said to repeat the test if things got worse and if Ketones were found I would need to go into hosp for a drip.

Today's test was positive but this GP was not too bothered and said the Ketones were there as a result of my throwing up and I just need to eat little and often. He has sent my wee off for further analysis but that is more or less it.

I am obviously quite concerned with the opposing messages and would like to know if anyone else has Ketones in their wee or knows enough to let me know which bit of advice seems more reasonable.

Thanks in advance.

A little bit of ketones is common if you haven't eaten much/are vomiting. Lots of ketones may suggest you need treatment for the sickness. They generally give a result from + to +++.

If you had a mildly positive result then do carry on with the little and often approach. FWIW the drip would improve any dehydration and drugs can reduce how often you vomit but TBH most antisickness drugs are not very effective for nausea, which is often the worst bit.

hiya, i was admitted into hospital 2 weeks ago because of severe dehydration and ketones in my wee (im now 8 weeks)
the drip actually helped me to keep fluids down (not sure how!) and feeling much better for it
if your worried that your gp is being a bit of a dick non commital then i would suggest taking yourself to the hospital and telling them how rough youve been feeling. they will then do their own tests and if they find ketones then they will probs keep you in!
(however, phone the a and e department of the hospital first and ensure that they are okay to carry it out, i was sent to a hosital miles away because the one closer couldnt deal with it!)

Hi ladies, I just wanted to say thanks for your advice. I did follow it up with my midwife and she referred me back to the GP. To summarise I ended up in hospital on a drip for severe dehydration. I'm home now with a prescription for Cyclizine which appears to be working and I feel much much better.
