Cancelled NCT Class

Hi all,

This is my first post, so please let me know if I inadvertently commit a mumsnet faux pas.

I'm 34 weeks pregnant and in a bit of a panic after my husband received an e-mail from the NCT organiser cancelling our antenatal course. I was really looking forward to meeting new parents and now we have no way of meeting people...

So my questions are:

  1. How likely am I to get a cancellation slot for another NCT class?
  2. How else can I meet new parents?
  3. Are there any DVD's that can do the same job as an NCT course?
  4. Will I have all the information I need if I attend the free PRU hospital class?

Many thanks

Oh no, that's a shame. I'd contact your local nct branch and ask if there is another class you can attend locally. Was yours a one day course?? Ours was spread over 7 weeks so we had to start before 34 weeks! The NHS should run Parentcraft classes too - check your local GP/midwife.
No idea about the free hosp class - the NCT does cover everything you need, more than the NHS certainly. But the NCT can recommend books etc if you want to know as much as poss about the birth experience. Or if you want to make friends, then how about joining the NCT and attending as many bumps and babies playtimes/coffee mornings/events etc after your baby has arrived?
hth and good luck.

Hi There
I here that the nct are cancelling a lot of classes particularly in slough windsor this spring, maybe because of price?

I'm sorry that your nct class has been cancelled. There are other ways you can get to meet local parents if you can't get on the nhs classes.

If you have no joy with the nhs classes then I suggest you contact your local children's centre to see if they have a bumps and under ones group. La Leche league groups are a great way to learn about breastfeeding.

As far as practical knowledge you can get a lot from the internet and books. I am sure that some mumsnetters can recommend some good sites. There are other private providers other than the nct for classes.

Tbh I wished I'd not bothered doing them, a waste of time for me, but then again I know a lot of babies and children so already knew most of it.

We did get friendly with a few people but I met my close mum friends at things like baby massage, baby swimming, play groups etc.

You could check out your local area to see if there are any other groups on, my area does a guided birth class and a bumps and babies group, speak to your midwife to see if she knows of anything or contact your local sure start centre.

I wish I hadn't bothered with NCT. I don't keep in touch with anyone from it. My GPs organised a really useful post-natal group and, since we all live really near each other, I have found it a much better group of new parents to keep in touch with.

Not sure what area you are from but there is some other ante natal classes you may be interested in, try Lazy Daisy birthing classes, they are a movement and relaxation class helping you to achieve the birth you want. Try their website www.thelazydaisychain.co.uk
