Just to let everyone who followed my last thread know, my dsis gave birth to a lovely baby girl on Saturday night. She weighed in at 6lb13oz, little nipper!
She had a bit of gas/air, and spent the last 3 hours in the birthing pool, which seemed to help her pain alot. She was brilliant!
I managed to get a few snaps in between back rubbing and brow mopping, but I don't know how they're gonna come out cause it was quite hard to focus on moving subject!
Both are now fine and enjoying time with the family.

What was it like watching someone else go through all that boogs? I can't imagine!

Glad all is well and CONGRATS to your sis and her wee dd.

snickers · 20/05/2003 10:35

Bless - CONGRATS to the newest family member. Sounds like she had a good experience!

Well done to your dsis boogs, was it totally amazing being there? I would love to be someone's birth partner.

doormat · 20/05/2003 11:20

Welcome to the world

Claireandrich · 20/05/2003 11:29

Welcome to her little girl.

Bet it was strange being at the other 'side' though!

boogs · 20/05/2003 12:03

Ahhhh, thanks everyone! I'll extend all your good wishes to dsis.

Well, yeah, it was certainly an experience!
I think I forgot how painful giving birth actually was, and seeing dsis really brought it home. Now I know how dh felt!
I must say, it was a bit disturbing. What was so hard was not really being able to help much. I just had to let her get on with it, and hope it wasn't gonna go on for ages, which it didn't thankfully. Sis was 3cm by the time we got to hosp. (8pm) and after waiting 1 and a half hours to be examined (I was also amazed at the lack of info offered-no-one was telling us anything)they told her the baby was facing the wrong way. Her son was the same and she had an epi. with him. She moaned 'oh no, not again'. I felt for her then. But she was really calm, and used short doses of gas/air, and kept upright mostly. It must have been really disheartening to hear that again. After dsis got into the water she seemed to be more comfortable, even tho the pain was bad. But before long the m/w said she could push, which was good news. A few minutes later baby was born into the water. She's so gorgeous! So tiny. Just amazing.
You've gotta be really strong to be at a birth, it's not for the feint-hearted, like me. I think I'm still recovering! It seems worse when you're watching someone else do it.

Glad she had such a good experience - all that positive talking of your must have worked! You'll have to come with me next time

boogs · 20/05/2003 17:38

Thanks again!

Beetroot,I think she knew she had to push when she felt it, but was waiting to hear that she was dilated enough for it to be safe. I dunno if its dangerous to push too soon. She thought she had a while to go before she should push but the m/w said she could see baby's head., which was a releif.

Ninja, you can't be serious!

Beetroot - I agree with you
Having said that - and Mears can correct me - often MW like to give the grrenlight for 2 reasons...

  1. Make sure you are indeed fully dilated as if you have the urge to push and you still have a bit of cervix, it may swell up and then it get harder and trickier...
  2. if you have an epidural (and sometimes without one too) some MW like your body to do the work and get the baby to come down a bit further before you push, to limit the amount of minutes/hours you would push.

Well done Boogs - so not keen to be a doula ????
Glad you got to see a water birth - they are my favourite as I find them more calm....

What is dsis anyway... dear sister????
I must be very tired!

Marina · 21/05/2003 19:16

Congratulations to your sister Boogs, it must have been a very special moment for you both (even if it has put you off for the time being )

boogs · 21/05/2003 19:50

Thanks everyone.
Dsis is now looking for a name. I think she's going for Amber. It was Nina but dp wasn't impressed. I now have to tell dd that her new cousin isn't Nina but Amber. She's gonna be very confused!
