Can I get a knee replacement surgery while being pregnant?

Hello everyone. I am Zayne. I had a knee replacement surgery scheduled for next month, but yesterday I found out that I am currently 3 weeks pregnant. I am concerned that if I go on with this surgery, it might affect my baby. I would like to hear some opinions about this. Should I go on with the surgery? Or should I drop it till I give birth?

They won't operate while you're pregnant.

rubyslippers · 16/05/2025 15:14

You won’t be able to have surgery whilst pregnant

LIZS · 16/05/2025 15:52

If there are any anaesthetics or xrays involved it won’t go ahead.

Communitywebbing · 16/05/2025 18:20

No way I’m afraid. The trauma, quantity of drugs needed and physical pain are huge. Save it for when your child is out in the world. What bad timing for you.

PoopingAllTheWay · 16/05/2025 18:21

Its not up to you

They 100% will not operate on you

MellowPinkDeer · 16/05/2025 18:22

of course you can’t!! How ridiculous you even have to ask. You’ll have to postpone until after the baby is born.

Destiny123 · 16/05/2025 18:41

Chat it through with your team. How disabled are you? They're v v v likely to say wait. The issue will mainly be need for post op xrays at peak time of organogenesis so the highest risk time for xraying someone. The anaesthetic is the same for a knee as a csection so in itself not the issue

Cinai2 · 16/05/2025 18:44

You obviously need to tell them that you’re pregnant and then see what they say, they will be able to tell what is and is not possible.

Deanthebean · 16/05/2025 18:47

🙄

ChocolateGanache · 16/05/2025 18:48

No

Ponderingwindow · 16/05/2025 18:51

Even if the surgery or procedure is for something life threatening, doctors will hesitate to proceed if you are pregnant.

I had the worst time getting permission to get a root canal for a serious dental infection while pregnant

your knee replacement is postponed

tripleginandtonic · 16/05/2025 18:54

If you're only 3 weeks you could have an abortion and get your knee surgery sooner I suppose it depends on how badly you need it.

MyOliveHelper · 16/05/2025 19:01

I do know of a person who did have elective surgery while pregnant, and it wasn't life saving but around quality of life (pain). They did have to fight for it. It took place when they were 20 weeks pregnant if I remember correctly, of course they assumed the risks and felt it was the best option. Better than having the baby while having the issue.

They did end up having the baby early (I think 34/40) and that is a potential risk of surgery while pregnant although it wasn't immediately related to the surgery. I think there is a positive association with IUGR and maternal anaesthesia and stunted growth baby was delivered early. They were fine though. Went home at 35/40.

Well should be even more reason to leave it up to mum to decide what risks to assume.

housemaus · 16/05/2025 22:33

I clicked this thread by accident but the people being sneery and rolly-eyed are rude as fuck. I don't have children and had no idea you couldn't have surgery when pregnant, so I don't think it's as obvious as some of you are assuming...

27pilates · 16/05/2025 23:22

Elective surgery is postponed until after delivery. This includes pain. Life-threatening /emergency surgery is a different matter.

You're dumb if you'd let someone decide for you like that. We are allowed to assume what risks we see fit to assume. Guidelines aren't laws.

27pilates · 17/05/2025 16:26

MyOliveHelper, I don’t ‘think’, I ‘know’ it works like that 🥴

Op, I’ve had a knee replacement, not whilst pregnant, and it was done with an epidural and sedation but if I’d not wanted the sedation they’d have it done it just with the epidural. Talk to your Drs and see what they say.

Dreichweather · 17/05/2025 16:30

No. Aside from the op it’self recovery from a knee replacement is very hard work and painful. Nothing some thing you would want to do while pregnant.

WildCats24 · 17/05/2025 16:32

I had (non-knee) surgery this year. They took a urine sample that morning. They won’t operate on you. Also…the pain meds aren’t okay for pregnant women.

Deciding for yourself only works if you don’t need the participation of another person. You can’t force a doctor to operate.

Most are going to take a conservative stance and want an official approval from a midwife, obstetrician, or even maternal-fetal medicine.

Really? So if, heaven forbid, a pregnant woman had surgery and the worst happened, the surgical and anaesthetic team would just have to deal with the consequences because ‘mum accepted the risks’? It doesn’t work like that.

It was established that I needed fairly major surgery when I was pregnant, and I had it when my DS was 4 weeks old because absolutely nobody was going to operate on me during pregnancy.

This is a very good point.
