well. That was eventful! Had a sooty&sweep Weds 12th afternoon and warned to expect some mild cramping. Around 6.15 started having major pains so wasn't sure if they were contractions or not - phoned hosp for advice and they said there was no way of knowing either.
About 2am, felt in agony and still having irregular contractions, sometimes 10mins sometimes 5mins apart and lasting either nearly 2 mins or only 50secs. Called m/w out as still hoping for home birth at this stage. She confirmed it was latent stage, and i was at 2cm dilation, but cervix slightly further forward/thinner than earlier that day, but not much progress other than that.
M/w came round for my daily bp check thurs morning and found trace protein in urine sample, advised that home birth support no longer appropriate so sent me straight off to hosp (via ambulance since i couldn't really drive myself!). BP fine at hosp, and no sign of protein after all so really pissed off that had been used as the excuse to get me in there. Had to stay on in hosp and wait it out.
It was DH's birthday so he spent that with me getting excited that he'd have an extra special present that day, but after spending all day getting bloody painful "niggles", he got sent home at 8pm with nothing going on.
Friday i was induced, spent another day in agony and gave up when even the pethadine didn't have any effect...dh got sent home at 8 again, but they called him back just before midnight as i'd finally reached a massive 3cm.
At least at 3cm i was allowed a transfer to the proper labour ward, and got an epidural which was wonderful!
What they didn't mention was that the baby was back to back with deflexed head, hence slow progress....spent most of Sat wired up to ctg and baby's heartrate kept dipping with every contraction, but after i got to 5cm there was no further progression so decision was made for csection. Could have told them it would end up that way after they induced me!
So, baby Edwyn Douglas was born on Sat weighing 8lb 14, a long 61cm with a big head. He came out looking severly bruised and still has a bump on his nose where he was probably being rammed into my pelvis!
Mild concerns about jaundice, but tests got him the ok despite him not feeding properly - can't latch on and they didn't want to let us go home until this was sorted out...2 nipple shields and a 2 1/2hr feed later, we'd sussed the problem so get a late escape pass to come home on 18th.

heeeeeeeeeey Fn41, well done! imo and ime there is more bravery in facing the NHS than natural childbirth, which makes you brave to the nth degree in my book. and god, having to stay wired up to monitor is the hardest thing on the planet, I remember with ds1 the discomfort (to putit mildly!).

i hope you are all settling well at home, and wish you well for your recovery.

camillathechicken · 21/03/2008 09:04

WinkyGirl · 23/03/2008 13:08

61 cm!!!! Wow, didn't think that was even possible! Ds was 52 and we were told that was v. long....must've been all curled up in there. Congrats!

pendulum · 24/03/2008 13:27

Congratulations!

My planned VBAC became an EMCS for exactly the same reasons in September (OP, deflexed, two-day latent phase....)

Enjoy your little boy and remember you did all you could deliver him "your way"... as you say, the important thing is that he is here and healthy x

dillinger · 25/03/2008 12:52

Congratulations! xx

not convinced on the 61cm myself, but don't know how they measured him! Maybe they just mis-wrote 51cm in the notes?

Oh I had a similarish experinence in Dec - although I wasn't allowed home in betwen sweep and emerengy cs....I am still bitter about my non-home birth.

Still enjoy your little boy - love the name.
