Haylstones gives birth- the long and short versions here

Short version- baby boy born by emergency cs on Sunday afternoon weighing 9lb 8oz . Home on Tuesday and coping well.

Long version- I had contractions on and off from Friday night until Saturday night but was examined and told not in labour so went home. Woke at 3.30 on Sun morning with excruciating contractions every 3 mins(seriously, I've given birth before and these were horrific!) so went back to hospital and found I was 2 cm. I had a shot of pethidine, which didn't help much then when I was next examined I was 6cm and went onto G+A. Still in agony so asked for an epidural, which was duly given. 10cm arrived very quickly and I tried pushing..and pushing...and pushing but nothing happened. Doc examined me and found baby was posterior, hence strong contractions and problems pushing so I was taken into theatre to try for forceps. Baby was still too high up so he was pushed back up the little bit he'd come down and then delivered at 15.48 by c section. He was a bit poorly at first but apgar score was 10 by 5 mins [happy] and he is beautiful. General opinion is that had he been a bit smaller or in a better position there wouldn't have been a problem and I shouldn't have needed a c section but the combination meant it just wasn't going to happen.
I feel a bit gutted that I progressed through labour so well and quickly (was so proud of myself when they said at lunch time he'd be here soon) then ended up with section, which tbh I found really traumatic and stressful and still can't think about; I was shaking and trembling for ages during and after it. He weighed 9lb 8oz (wasn't exxpecting that, dd was 7lb2!) However, he is happy and healthy. We had a difficult first few days as he was unsettled and constantly hungry but things have settled a bit now and he's eating and sleeping well (coincidign with coming home after 2 days - was 'persuaded' I should but am not convinced- and my milk coming in!)He's extremely chilled and laid back and dh has been fab, dd is besotted with him.
For those who read the long version, well done and thanks to those who gave me advic eon Sat afternoon.

callmeovercautious · 28/02/2008 12:33

Weel done

Look after yourself too.

theheadgirl · 28/02/2008 12:34

Congratulations Haylstones, that sounded a bit fraught, and he's a whopper!. Take your time to recover now. Lay on the sofa with your babies, and let people bring you things. Sleep when he does. Have baths with lavendar oil in. Have shopping delivered on t'internet. And well done!

zebedee1 · 28/02/2008 12:55

Congratulations and well done to you, it sounds like you had a difficult time and coped really well, look after yourself and rest now.

PS DS (9 months) was also a 9lb 8oz whopper, there is a theory that the big'uns eat and sleep well because they can fit more milk into their big tummies, hope this is true for you !

Thanks, that's reassuring on lots of counts. I feel really happy but evry now and then I remember dh walking into the delivery room all scrubbed up and the intense panic I felt .
I have lots to be thankful for though and he is gorgeous! Will try to add pic to my profile

Hi haylstones congratulations! .
Really pleased for you and your family for the new arrival
Sorry to hear you had a really hard time, I understand some of what you have been through, as that could have been my first birth experience you described, except I only made 9cm. I hope you can move on from it in time and come to realise that its the end result thats important. It might help to go through your notes with someone if there are any points that you aren't clear about.

You couldn't have done any more than you did and should feel really proud. OP labours are notoriously painful compared to the right position and especially with a bigger baby.

AngeChica · 28/02/2008 14:30

congratulations, just wanted to say i found my recent section quite traumatic too, nothing you read prepares you for it properly. But this does fade after a few weeks and it doesn't haunt me any more. Too busy looking after DS! I am going to review my notes with a dr at the hospital at 6 weeks and this could help you too.

Haylstones · 28/02/2008 16:36

Thanks, am not complaining honest, just relieved he's here and can't believve the pg went so quickly!

Congratulations! He is a whopper!
Take it easy and let yourself recover from the op, better to take the time now than still be feeling the effects later if you try and do too much too soon.

I had painful OP labour with dd, who was a diddly 6 lb 13 oz, so well done you with such a big baby.
