Did doctor reveal baby gender?!

I’m 31 weeks pregnant and had a growth scan yesterday. We do not want to know the gender and have always told the sonographers this and looked away when they get to the sensitive areas!

Anyway the baby was measuring on the large size yesterday. After our scan I had an appointment with a consultant who said ‘I see HE’S going to be a very big LAD’.

I was a bit shocked and didn’t say anything but does this mean he’s seen on my notes that we’re having a boy?

Feeling a bit deflated now, like the surprise has been ruined. It’s always been such a special moment for us at the birth when we find out!

Not necessarily. Sometimes they just default to a gender.

TallulahBetty · 16/05/2023 09:09

Sex* and possibly. I also didn't know the sex, had a scan right before my induction and the midwife said 'oh she doesn't have much fluid around her'. At the time, I thought nothing of it, as I was too worried about the baby not moving/having to be induced, but looking back, she might have let slip.

Justputitdown · 16/05/2023 09:17

In this case, I think he probably did.

To put it in perspective, I've never had the luxury of choosing a surprise because my children have all been so high risk it's been more about whether they'll survive in utero.

While is is awful for you, please don't diminish other people's wishes to have a surprise.

ComeTheFuckOnBridgett · 16/05/2023 09:20

He could have. But it might have just been default instead of calling the baby 'it' or whatever.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 16/05/2023 09:22

I don’t know if they routinely note the sex on the notes do they?

I had a scan with my second a bit further on around 36 weeks and we said we didn’t want to know, he told us to look away when he was scanning but then said he couldn’t actually see anyway as the baby was quite squashed up.

Blueroses99 · 16/05/2023 09:22

Well the doctor hasn’t spoiled the surprise because you don’t know, and won’t know, until birth.

HowDoYouDoWhatYouDoToMeIWishIKnew · 16/05/2023 09:28

I noticed throughout my pregnancies that midwives and doctors usually default to either he or she and use it for every baby.

I had one sonographer through 3 of my pregnancies and she said 'he' throughout and they were all girls. My consultant said 'she' throughout and that included one boy and 3 girls.

They do this to save saying "it" when talking about your baby.

They don't note the sex down unless it's particularly relevant for any reason anyway.

Hope all goes well with the birth, enjoy those lovely baby snuggles when the time comes 💐

Yes this is what I want to know really. Don’t know if they’re are any midwifes/doctors on here that have the answer.

Is the sex on the notes?

If not then he wasn’t at the scan so might just have said he/lad to avoid calling baby ‘it’ etc but if it is on the notes then he’s probably just told us we’re having a boy!

The sex isn't generally noted unless there are obvious issues relating to the genitalia, or syndromes etc

Louoby · 16/05/2023 09:32

More than likely they saw the sex on the scan and has slipped up.

Yes this is our 5th baby and we’ve had the odd she/he but i didn’t think they were obviously talking about the gender.

This time it seemed more than that though as he said ‘big LAD’ which seems a bit of a weird thing to say if he doesn’t know?!

I think you are probably over-thinking this. The Dr saw a big baby and most likely just defaulted to 'boy' on that basis. People say all kinds of stupid things to pregnant ladies and Drs are no exception!

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 16/05/2023 09:41

They did this with me too, and he was a lad. 50/50 chance!

Bananah · 16/05/2023 09:43

You are probably having a boy. Doctors are there to monitor your health, not to pander to your personal feelings about “wanting a surprise”.

Who pissed on your chips? Of course you dont have to find out the sex. Pandering, lol.

AffableApple · 16/05/2023 10:19

I had twins. Didn’t want to know. Sometimes they were called boys, sometimes girls. Just convenient to give them a sex on speech. Don't worry.

YouveGotAFastCar · 16/05/2023 10:22

At my 20 week scan, the sonographer told my husband that tall men usually have tall daughters, but he'd measure her legs again to be sure. He made quite a big deal out of it, called through to reception again to tell them he'd need an extra 5 minutes for the scan, etc.

It was a bit surreal, given he'd asked us a few minutes earlier if we wanted to know, and we'd said no.

We had a boy, anyway! I think sometimes they alternate, and sometimes they might just tell you the wrong thing on purpose... But you'd never know. You won't know, until you have them.

Wrongsideofpennines · 16/05/2023 10:27

As far as I know its not recorded in the notes. Not for a routine growth scan anyway. You would probably have your scan report in your handheld notes and that's what he will have seen.

My midwife always said that she defaulted to 'he' so not to read anything into it. Also, you don't know if the doctor was saying they are a boy, so it's not really spoilt the surprise as you still aren't sure.

Sex isn't noted or checked for as part of standard checks.

Most people don't like people using "it" to describe the baby and usually default to he.

I wouldn't worry.

Scalessayeek · 16/05/2023 10:37

Never had sex noted on my notes with either of my two, had lots of in-depth notes with consultants. I think it may be just his way? I mean he’s a 50/50 chance of being right, but unless he’s seen lots of ultrasound footage or images of the area which I doubt he has I wouldn’t even give it a second thought.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/05/2023 10:40

Yeah mentioning lad straight after he means he definitely thinks it's a boy
