Long story, sorry!

I was taken in to hospital 12 days overdue to be induced on Friday morning. The ward was full and i had to wait for an internal that showed my cervix was 1-2cm and still thick short. The consultant agreed to a pessary of prostaglandin at 2pm and to await events. So wait we did.....and wait....and wait some more.

I was examined again at 8 and was told cervix the same, joy. The ward was still full so they wouldnt break my waters that night anyway. I was put on the monitor and as usual showed up some lovely contractions that were doing bugger all. 3 midwives all came in and looked at the trace and said "oooh another 5-10 mins" DH went home and after 2 hours i was finally taken off the monitor. Now normally as soon as i get up they all stopped, this did not happen.

DH was at home by now and i was starting to think that perhaps he should have stayed. I paced around for a bit, got watched by the girl in the next bed for a bit, went for a wee. Tried to read some Harry Potter, started sitting on the bed, went to leaning over the bed and eventually kneeling on the bed over the table re reading the same 3 lines . It was after 10 mins of this i thought i was probably in labour.

I went to find a midwife and politely stood waiting while she chatted to a Reg, contracting every 2 mins. Our ability to be very British even in these kind of circumstances never ceases to amaze me! She took one look and got her gloves and followed me back to my bed ( i could feel the girl in the next bed listening) My hind waters broke on the walk back and i started to go in to mild panic as my last baby had come about 3 minutes after this sequence of events. I phoned DH and asked him to come quickly. I was transferred to the delivery suite and waited for DH to arrive. The midwife had said she would break my forewaters as that was probably all that was keeping the baby in there.

DH arrived and the midwife got out her crochet hook, i was still only 2-3 cm though and she struggled to break my waters as his head was so high Alarm bells started ringing in my head. I had a shot of Diamorphine to make me relax and save the entonox mask from being visibly bitten with each contraction. I went from 3-10 cm in about 10 minutes and started pushing. His head would not descend though. This went on for an hour or so but no change.

I ended up signing my life away on the section\forceps\ventouse consent forms. I was taken down to theatre and given a spinal and assumed the baby was well and truly stuck. The lovely Reg said she would try the ventouse first, so after half an hour of frantic pushing from me and pulling from her Beau Oscar was born at 0417.

His head had gone in to my pelvis transverse and the Reg had to rotate his head to help it fit through what was already a very tight squeeze. He weighed 9lb 2oz.

Obviously DH has been traumatised and even i have said "no more babies". Beau is of course totally worth it and the most gorgeous baby immaginable
