Flum gets another baby girl - vbac this time

She's a little cracker looks exactly like dd1 did so she will be gorgeous too, hoorah!!

She arrived Monday 19th at 20.47 after 20 hours of labour.

For those of you that like the details here they are:

Contractions started at 01.30 on the Monday am. Not exactly regular but 2 - 8 minutes apart pretty quickly so called hospital and doula and got dd1 out of bed.

Drove the 1 hour to hospital dropping off dd1 at best friends on the way. Having pretty good contractions all the way and shaking and teeth chattering madly (not sure what that was all about)

Arrived at hospital - was 4 cm dilated. Got put onto monitor due to it being vbac. Had blood pressure taken it was raised. Having to lie on my back for the monitor DID MAKE THE CONTRACTIONS MUCH HARDER TO COPE WITH. When I was standing up I could breath through them with little problems. Had to have lots of blood tests and stuff - not sure why.

Anyway after a couple of hours at hospital I decided I was not going to cope with the pain. They had to wait nearly an hour to take my blood test as I couldn't sit down for him to put the tourniquet on.

I was shaking dreadfully and felt very sick all the time at hospital.

Got the epidural - it was like MAGIC - took ALL the pain away. Laboured like that all day with midwives saying 'you are labouring really well' and me just laughing as I wasn't doing AN~YTHING just sitting reading Heat magazine.

It was totally SURREAL. At about 3pm the midwife said I was fully dialated but they would wait for an hour for the baby to descend a bit. When the hour was up the Consultant had been called to do a c-section. She didn't want me to try pushing without him around due to my blood pressure and the scar so we waited, and waited and waited. As soon as he was around and she told me to start pushing the contractions TOTALLY STOPPED. What followed was Syntocin drip to try to kick start contractions. Got prepped for theatre for c-section - epidural topped up. I cried like a baby and shook uncontrollably while all this was happening. My dh said he had never seen anyone look so afraid and react so physically to it. I am clearly a total chicken sh*t. Consultant said we would try with ventouse very briefly but probably would have to do a section. I was scared as anaestth blokey said would have to put me under as epidural not working properly.

Anyway he got her out with the ventouse. Got stitched up which took ages. Oddly we discovered during all this we had mutual friends of the anaesthetist and dh and he were making dinner party arrangements while I was being stitched legs akimbo!!! Still finding sitting down difficult.

On balance although the pain relief was amazing it wasn't the 'wonderful' natural birth I was hoping for and I think I would opt for an elective c-section next time. The Doula didn't really help at all.

Needless to say chuffed to bits with new baby though.

Ahhhhh, congratulations.

Laura032004 · 25/06/2006 09:16

Congratulations

CarolinaMoose · 25/06/2006 09:23

congratulations

how are you feeling now?

I'd just say the uncontrollable shaking is caused by the anaesthetic (or poss dropping blood pressure or something) - I had a similar thing with my cs on the operating table. It isn't caused by fear.

trinityrhino · 25/06/2006 09:32

Congratulations flum

for you all

Congratulations!

BTW, c/s strength epidural can cause shaking as a recognised side effect -- our anaesthetist warned me about it and sure enough I was shaking like anything.

pupuce · 25/06/2006 10:06

Flum - great news that it's worked out... sadly not as well as you would have liked.... don't know what doula did or didn't do... was she experienced at all ???? Were you contantly monitored ? Did they not offer to take you off the monitor so that you could mobilize ? Or didn't doula ask ?
I suspect epidural made the synto and ventouse necessary
Focus on positive as you say.... beautiful baby.... and you'll probably be up and about soon

JanH · 25/06/2006 10:07

Congratulations, Flum - she sounds lovely and I think you are very brave

littlerach · 25/06/2006 10:15

I did the shaking and teeth chattering thing, and the mw told me it was prob shock, and/or blood pressure related. I did it before, as it was quick labour, then afterwards they took ages to give me the injection for the placenta as I wasn't still enough!

Congratulations.

Congratulations Flum. Agree with pupuce though - it is a shame you were monitored so heavily. The thing is, you have 'proved' you can dekliver vaginally with this birth so you and your care givers will be more confident next time round. You felt yourself how harder it is to cope with contractions when you are immobilised. Next time you would have the confidence to be mobile - even have a waterbirth!

If you decide to have another, it is highly likely you would achieve your 'wonderful' natural birth. However, you should be totally proud of yourself that you managed a VBAC despite the intervention. Well done

Flum - don't forget that you are quite probably on less (no) drugs now than if you had a ceasarean,... if you're breatsfeeding that's a plus.... with time you will see that you did GREAT!!!! And I totally agree with Mears about the next time.... too early to discuss it though!

SomethingAboutMary · 25/06/2006 17:24

Congratulations Flum & welcome to the world baby Flum xxxx

WellKnownMemorablePeachyClair · 25/06/2006 17:28

Congrats Flum- lovely news!

I had the shaking too for days after giving birth, I had raised BP for weeks before. Think it may well be due to it coming down- anaesthetic does make your BP drop.

biglips · 25/06/2006 17:30

yyaayyy congrats xx

Re: sitting down - try putting a pillow towards the front of the seat and sit down with your bottom behind the pillow - this is what i did when I had stitches and it helped me.

Many congrats Flum - all sounds very familiar. I had VBAC too, minus the epidural. Big mistake. HUGE. I didn't find it to be a wonderful experience either. However DS2 (& DH1) are so so worth it. You'll start feeling back to normal soon enough, for now cosy on up with the new arival & rest when you can.

I had the shakes too - uncontollable trembling with c-section epidural & legs were shaking teribly with VBAC. Reckon its your bodies reaction to pain - adrenalin or something. Thought my c-section scar would be all over place, but very nice lady stiched it nice & straight. They are clever those hospital folk.

cupcakes · 25/06/2006 20:35

many congratulstions, flum! Has she a name? What does she weigh? Has she met her big sister yet?
xx

NotAnOtter · 25/06/2006 20:38

flum fantastic - sounds very similar to my 5th birth four months ago.
